Democracy is overrated - China won

Fox News, X, NYP, WSJ, CBS News, NYT, etc are all in on it.

This.

PP complains about housing and infrastucture, but funny how democracy had no problem giving us those until 15 years ago. Democracy also gave us civil rights, wage-and-hour laws, and, yes, healthcare. Employer-sponsored insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid were all modern solutions to improving social welfare at the time they were enacted. Outside the U.S., democracy is also what created actual universal healthcare. China, meanwhile, has famously stingy social programs, which is a big reason its economy is deflating because people have to hoard all their savings.

The “problem” with democracy, is that one side spent the past quarter century deliberately ensuring government wouldn’t function so that they could justify tax cuts for themselves. The Russians caught on to this around the dawn of social media and have been working to foment division in that side’s favor ever since. Why? Because they too benefit when their enemies’ governments stop working.

The "problem" with democracy is still a problem with democracy. China doesn't have a foreign propaganda problem.

its not that- its b/c we have transformed into an oligarchy- monied interests are able to purchase legislation.

Regardless of the system - parliamentary, presidential, etc - it is unfit for purpose.

At the local level, our inability to build the housing and infrastructure needed is reflective of democracy.

At the state and national level, democracy keeps giving us rubes and charlatans who drop the ball on healthcare, foreign affairs.

I recently spent 2 months in Asia. While Japan and Korea have democracy it isn’t like ours. And China…I’m sorry, but China is amazing. I don’t particularly care for Chinese people or culture, but their vision of governance and the state as a shepherd of a civilization is impressive.

Everything works in China pretty much.

Xi cares about the Chinese civilization in a fundemental way our leaders don’t care about America.

Honestly, if Jensen Huang was given dictatorial powers, we’d be better off.

Korea and Japan have some issues around work culture but things are pretty amazing there as well.

Instead of saber rattling and antagonizing China, we should be looking to build bridges and gain real understanding of their success. You don’t see China doing Israel’s bidding. They think in centuries, while we think about the 24 hr news cycle.

You can't separate their culture and their approach to government. The recent gains to quality of life are economic only. They are not matched by gains in the quality of spiritual, psychological, athletic, creative, etc etc aspects of life.

I don’t get this spiritual or creative quality of life comment at all. These are very subjective things that have no actual impact on your day to day life. They don’t impact life expectancy, air quality, economic development or anything that actually matters.

USA has church and Hollywood and football. That's spiritual and creative and athletic.

So stupid. Their cars, roads, and taxi, bus, train, and plane infrastructure is way better. I was there in the late 90s and in 30 years they have literally transformed dozens of cities way more populated and advanced than American ones. They have a surplus of educated citizens so they have to export them to the rest of the world. These people literally become a global network of trade and services. They've learned from the Japanese and Korean economic policies. As seen in other Asian economic miracles, democracy will come later.

Their people flee their country and don't want to go back to live there. How very strange -- you'd think it would be the opposite, given that the homeland is a paragon of virtues.

I suppose if you just rule out the poor people in the US and their problems, you could also say there are no problems in the US.

Funny how good any country looks when you just cherry-pick what counts. It's an adventure.

Beijing took poor citizens off the streets before the Olympics, to make it look “presentable.”

It blocked people from traveling during COVID. Our friend was stuck in Beijing for a year.

Even before that all citizens and expat travel was monitored.

During swine flu it quarantined children and administers meds to them without parental consent.

Citizens assume everything they consume could be fake, remember baby formula?

And on….

Engineers (China) vs lawyers (the US). Read Dan Wang’s book Breakneck. It’s an interesting read.

Because their solution is the Great Firewall and a nationwide censorship regime.

Where exactly are your stats on that? You sound racist. The poor people come here to work and live just like 150 other countries in the world. But so many educated Chinese on student visas go back to China. I hope you're not confusing with the Taiwan(#1)ese or Hong Kongers.

Asians will dominate the future world because they are more hard working, their citizens are smarter, and the governments plan ahead better. In several Asian countries, entirely new cities have been created almost overnight because there was a need for them. How many brand new cities have been created in America in the past 100 years?

China offers more support to returning overseas students as influx grows

China has launched a national-level service platform to help returning overseas students find work and start businesses, as the country steps up its efforts to attract talent and the number of returnees surges.

The Ministry of Education has partnered with 50 organisations to provide returnees with entrepreneurial mentors and match them directly with local government and corporate needs.

It always amazes me how we can be on good terms with countries that where we are accepting asylum claims from them.

Isn't the whole point of asylum claims to aid against regimes like the Nazis? But there they are Apple et. al. doing business with the Nazi's.

IMO we should have automatic sanctions for any country where we have to take asylees from.

Right?
