At the local level, our inability to build the housing and infrastructure needed is reflective of democracy.

At the state and national level, democracy keeps giving us rubes and charlatans who drop the ball on healthcare, foreign affairs.

I recently spent 2 months in Asia. While Japan and Korea have democracy it isn’t like ours. And China…I’m sorry, but China is amazing. I don’t particularly care for Chinese people or culture, but their vision of governance and the state as a shepherd of a civilization is impressive.

Everything works in China pretty much.

Xi cares about the Chinese civilization in a fundemental way our leaders don’t care about America.

Honestly, if Jensen Huang was given dictatorial powers, we’d be better off.

Korea and Japan have some issues around work culture but things are pretty amazing there as well.

Instead of saber rattling and antagonizing China, we should be looking to build bridges and gain real understanding of their success. You don’t see China doing Israel’s bidding. They think in centuries, while we think about the 24 hr news cycle.

You can't separate their culture and their approach to government. The recent gains to quality of life are economic only. They are not matched by gains in the quality of spiritual, psychological, athletic, creative, etc etc aspects of life.

I don’t get this spiritual or creative quality of life comment at all. These are very subjective things that have no actual impact on your day to day life. They don’t impact life expectancy, air quality, economic development or anything that actually matters.

That's not supported by science. There are many elements to quality of life, and they absolutely impact people's day to day lives.

No, Trumpism is fascism.

This is clearly on the Republican Party and Russia. China just got out of the way and let Trump and the Republicans destroy everything.

Trump and the republicans just do not believe in western values or democracy. If you do not believe in the system and its institutions you can throw wrenches in the works as you watch it all breaks down.

Correct. While China goes to EV and renewable energy, people like idiot Congressman John James (M10) thinks we should abandon this.

I don’t think democracy is a failure, it is just becoming increasingly more difficult in this country because Americans are starting to diverge from each other in very significant ways.

The OP is either a troll or a terribly deluded and ignorant person. Probably both.

I'm at a loss to explain why this would matter for one country in the comparison, but not the other. It's a mystery for the ages.

China won a lot before Trump. White immigrants and all the immigrants to the US are basically trashy people who couldn’t hack it in their own countries. China and Japan have much more elite, high IQ populations and always have. It’s over for the US.

Good joke, but Tokyo is 50-100x safer than DC for a reason. It’s not even close. When you have a high IQ population and don’t allow trashy people to come in and mess your country up your country is surprisingly nicer and you have much more social cohesion and social trust. Crazy idea I know.

its not that- its b/c we have transformed into an oligarchy- monied interests are able to purchase legislation. There is always that little trivia question about how the one conspiracy theory that is correct is that the automakers lobbied congress yo get rid of trams in cities - that was so unusual then that companies would octet policy that went against the interests of ordinary citizens. B/c of challenges to the civil rights legislation and deluded thinking on race from both left and right*. enormous amounts of money being pumped into the political system- we are no longer a functioning republic so its not quite fair to say that democracy or republicanism doesnt work since we dont effectively HAVE a democratic republic anymore. Representatives chose their constituents instead of the the other way around.

* the right wants to think we are a post racist society hence no need for the racial protections of the VRA. The left has gone full looney tunes and moved on from voting rights to other objectives when a focus on voting rights being enforced and fair representation in congress would be enough to overcome racial disparities and they took VRA for granted instead of committing to the reality that the only protest that counts is in the voting booth- educate and enable your voters to vote in their own interests.

If you look at how MAGA took however- you see that the right actually respects the will of its bonkers constituents, deplorable as they are while the left lectures and pontificates to its constituents instead of reflecting their needs and concerns. If the right acted in a more republican and mature manner and the left in a more responsive manner- both realizing they work for the same team- they'd come up with a competent consensus in how to govern but they are both maniacally committed to the concept that there are 2 nations- dem and rep locked in a struggle for power.

It’s why the trashy people in the US are so scared of H1B1 visa holders from Asia. They know they’re superior and smarter and are very insecure about competing with them.

This.

PP complains about housing and infrastucture, but funny how democracy had no problem giving us those until 15 years ago. Democracy also gave us civil rights, wage-and-hour laws, and, yes, healthcare. Employer-sponsored insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid were all modern solutions to improving social welfare at the time they were enacted. Outside the U.S., democracy is also what created actual universal healthcare. China, meanwhile, has famously stingy social programs, which is a big reason its economy is deflating because people have to hoard all their savings.

The “problem” with democracy, is that one side spent the past quarter century deliberately ensuring government wouldn’t function so that they could justify tax cuts for themselves. The Russians caught on to this around the dawn of social media and have been working to foment division in that side’s favor ever since. Why? Because they too benefit when their enemies’ governments stop working.

I lived in China for six years and you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Sit down.

P.S. you’ve also got it backwards, the people and culture are wonderful. Just another ugly American.

China's nominal GDP per capita in 2024 was $13,300.
