It’s not about the number of APs but taking on the hardest course load available at the particular school. Many schools don’t have APs at all. |

The one week on campus program costs $2,500. Your child gets not only the program, but overall exposure to college life and the a chance to see if the school is their first choice. Plus, the summer session financial aide for high school students is *incredibly* generious. Incomes under $65K pay nothing + all travel expenses are fully covered. For incomes under $120K, everything except travel expenses are covered.
Seems to me like a great model and I wish more schools would do this. Try out the campus, see how you like it AND the school get to see how you are in a classroom and as a member of the dorm community. If you love it and are sure its your #1 choice, then you can apply ED0 and get a decision with plenty of time to apply to other schools if the decision is not what you were hoping for. |
I know of multiple siblings that were not admitted over the past few years. Strong applicants with high scores, coursework, etc. |
Really? I think it is great if the kid already knows the kid almost definitely wants to attend. Otherwise, what kid is going to put down on his UVA (etc) app that he spent the summer before his senior year in this U Chicago program? For the kids who already know they want it, it seems like a good idea for them (but a massive money grab for the school for most kids...do you know lots of people with less than $65k in income). It sends the identical message when applying ED2 bc all other schools know they weren't the kid's first choice. Same with this UChicago program. |
Agree. That’s what my kid did this summer. Had a blast during the one-week enrichment program, which confirmed UChicago as top choice. NMSF, 4.0uw, 1550 SAT, top 10 percent of class, strong ECs, great essays. Done and happy. |
Jfyi, my kid didn’t put the UChicago enrichment program on their CommonApp. Plenty of other ECs. |
|
| Common App asks you to put down for credit classes taken at college. Mine did a 3 week class and did well, and recieved college credit. |
One week enrichment programs described above are not for credit. |
| Any ED0 acceptances test optional? |
Not here, very high scores |

I think this is a fantastic option for the right kid. Why draw out the stress? If the kid had exposure to the curriculum, loves the school, the school feels it's a fit- why wait? It's really a win-win. School fills a seat and kid is done. Applying ed is a choice/optional. I like seeing schools shake up the process. Kind of like wake forest rolling ed. I think it's great! My kid wasnt interested in either school but i felt almost jealous for families that were done by september/Oct of senior year. Usually only the athletic recruits hear early...

What do you consider "very high scores"? |
Above the 75% of the school’s common data set. |
Did you intend to write: Just shows how creative the admissions are at U Chicago ? Reminds me of the U Penn admissions "option" in place about 16 or so years ago offered to high school students who attended its summer program. That was unethical, but U Chicago's admissions option is creative & a great stress reducer for those admitted. |
