The Psychology Behind MAGA

A conversation with a fellow liberal made me think. He said that if the left had someone like Trump, they would get the same kind of following. Of course I was appalled and disagreed. But then he said, “Think about it. What if someone came along who would and could massively reduce gun violence, secure our reproductive rights, and even say the quiet parts out loud to the entire world.” I pointed out that reducing gun violence would save so many lives, and so would reproductive rights. And he pointed out that this is how they feel about abortions. They believe every abortion is murdering a baby. If you believed that, is there anything that would be more important to you? It made me think. I have to admit that I would probably be willing to put up with and justify a lot from someone who could accomplish those things.

I am NOT trying to make excuses or justify maga. I am still disgusted, disappointed, and confused by their loyalty to Trump. But it did give me a slightly different perspective.

You almost got it. Anti-abortion was a niche Catholic idea until republicans created it as a wedge issue and ran a campaign to brainwash a generation of scientifically illiterate people to believe abortion is murder, so they would turn off their brains completely regarding every other issue. It was a scam from the start.

Maybe so but I talked to the democratic committee running Hillary's campaign and said she didnt even agree to the Hyde Amendment. Why push the envelope on this issue which didnt need to be changed? Why weren't they ok with the status quo on abortion. It was obvious to me that it was a wedge issue and not important. The answer was they wanted to push the limits and see what they could do because they thought they would win and didnt rrally have to br strategic. It was a massively poor decision after also creating financial and international problems for the country as well as all the inmigrants. There are people in that party just like the Republicans who will not stop until everyone believes in their world order. Its not enough just to allow 90 percent of whatever a need is be legal and have a few needs in the country go unmet. People push the envelope and end up falling off a cliff. I hope those members who helped Hillary have done some self reflection on this issue but doubtful. Its always someone else. Maybe the Republicans will make the same blunder. I dont know. I think they are more strategic and realize they can be outnumbered by a younger generation turning quickly. Hopefully another wedge issue will come along the Democrats can leech onto. These groups will never learn. Most people want the country in the middle and so really both of these groups are outnumbered by the middle making pushing the envelope the only way to power.

You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

I can't believe you people

Where’s the lie? America was lucky that Joe McCarthy drank himself to death in his 40s also.

Much of MAGA stems from this:

Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work...For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. (Titus 3:1)

When you understand this you will understand MAGA: we love God AND our country. The Democratic party is home base for atheists, queers (black sheep), and communists. MAGA is diametrically opposed to these types of people, hence the divide in our nation: sheep vs goats, God-fearing vs godless: righteous vs unrighteous.

This is not to say MAGA is perfect, for we are human, only that The Bible is our absolute and final authority concerning human origins, proper sexual behavior, and moral conduct.

I will pre-empt those who will say, “Trump did this….said that…”.

Individual candidates do not define a political party’s platform, so sayeth I.

There are certainly candidates who act like Democrats (I always thought Trump a Democrat for the Miss America sleazefest he oversaw), and there are greedy and immoral politicians but on the whole, the R platform is a force for good and best for America.

I think you might want ti read your Bible a little more carefully. Because loving society's outcasts was Jesus' whole thing. You can't love God, and country, and your family when you reject the very people God instructed you to love, whose laws our country made equal and whose freedoms they meant to protect, people who ARE in fact your family or your neighbors or your community members.

Agreed. Jesus was all about mercy. Hate the sin but love and forgive the sinner. Have these so-called Christians never read the story of the Prodigal Son or the Good Samaritan? If you truly follow the teachings of Jesus, you don't get to hate anyone. You don't delight in exacting revenge and you certainly do not vilify and heap further suffering on the poor or the stranger.

Most American Christians are anything but. They are just like the Pharisees.

Agreed. Here we have a bunch of UMC liberal white women opining about the “psychology” of people who support the MAGA movement when they likely don’t even know one person who voted for Trump.
Instead of focusing on the issues important to people they go full on character assassination.
And they wonder why they lost…..

This. There are a million ways to manipulate. If people would rather be manipulated than face the truth in either party they will live in an extreme governmental or religious society. And religion is just another form of government.

It’s amazing that you’ve managed to be wrong about everything you’ve said.

Ok, not that amazing.

You don’t actually believe in God or the Bible, or if you do, you do not fear the reckoning on judgment day. God cares very little for your pronouncements of faith - he is judging you by the sin in your hearts and how you behave, what you support. Whoever told you just saying the magic words was enough was lying to you and your eternal future is at stake. Actions matter.

Jesus commanded you to love your neighbor as you love yourself. Either you don’t love yourself, or you are disregarding this most central command.

It's a simple formula: talk up the threat posed by social outsiders ("groomers"), take harsh stances on Law and Order issues, and be Pro Life.

This isn't specifically a Republican thing. Democrats did this for an entire century after the Reconstruction. MAGAs are basically pre-Civil Rights Acts Democrats.

+1

I know many

You know PPP, don't let the electoral college map fool you.

Many, many people in all the states voted against Trump.

There are no true states of just one color.

So, to be clear, you are anti-healthcare and you believe God will take care of your health? So you don’t want healthcare for you or your children? Because that is exactly what you voted for. You voted for more children to die from disease and malnutrition.
Fine- then don’t enter any more hospitals or medical clinics.
If you can be consistent with your views, I can understand and respect. When you waffle, it’s manipulation and not respectable.
Nobody is anti-healthcare but there is a considerable segment of the population who do not want their tax dollars murdering babies in the womb or paying for mentally confused people to get surgery and hormones to better deceive people that they are of the opposite sex.

Healthcare did not go away, nor is it going away because of Trump. Stop being a Democrat shill.

Religions are comprised of fictitious stories used to control people. We're seeing the apex of this right now with the GOP, which is currently headed by a very bad person and followed by an army of morons who lie to themselves about the transgressions of that very bad person.
