The Psychology Behind MAGA

They exhibit the following traits:

- A high degree of submission to the authorities who are perceived to be established and legitimate in the society in which one lives.

- A general aggressiveness, directed against various persons, that is perceived to be sanctioned by established authorities.

- A high degree of adherence to the social conventions that are perceived to be endorsed by society and its established authorities.

There is much more analysis. It is well worth the read:

Are they often those who did not have an established adult in their life growing up, or they had one that was authoritative like their organe leader's father was?

I’m the PP who posted the 2016 Post article on the first page, and I found it when I was trying to find a different article that I read a while ago that absolutely proved that support for Trump is predicted by the supporter having an authoritarian father. I will try to find that link.

Don't underestimate the mother's role in this. She usually shares her husband's hostility toward social outsiders and feels threatened by those who do not conform to what she sees as the traditional norms. She may be more indirect and "polite" about how she communicates her values.

Much of MAGA stems from this:

Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work...For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. (Titus 3:1)

When you understand this you will understand MAGA: we love God AND our country. The Democratic party is home base for atheists, queers (black sheep), and communists. MAGA is diametrically opposed to these types of people, hence the divide in our nation: sheep vs goats, God-fearing vs godless: righteous vs unrighteous.

This is not to say MAGA is perfect, for we are human, only that The Bible is our absolute and final authority concerning human origins, proper sexual behavior, and moral conduct.

I will pre-empt those who will say, “Trump did this….said that…”.

Individual candidates do not define a political party’s platform, so sayeth I.

There are certainly candidates who act like Democrats (I always thought Trump a Democrat for the Miss America sleazefest he oversaw), and there are greedy and immoral politicians but on the whole, the R platform is a force for good and best for America.

So, to be clear, you are anti-healthcare and you believe God will take care of your health? So you don’t want healthcare for you or your children? Because that is exactly what you voted for. You voted for more children to die from disease and malnutrition.
Fine- then don’t enter any more hospitals or medical clinics.
If you can be consistent with your views, I can understand and respect. When you waffle, it’s manipulation and not respectable.
Nobody is anti-healthcare but there is a considerable segment of the population who do not want their tax dollars murdering babies in the womb or paying for mentally confused people to get surgery and hormones to better deceive people that they are of the opposite sex.

Healthcare did not go away, nor is it going away because of Trump. Stop being a Democrat shill.

You need to go back to Biology class.

How can you expect people who believe they are feasting on Zombie Jesus every Sunday to understand biology?

DP: You lose credibility and the argument when you go full bigotry like that.

Its a wafer. That's it. To expect others to see more is the problem

Nobody expects others to see more. That does not excuse your bigotry about someone else's religion, not morally and not politically.

Othet than the trans issue which yes is biology related proving false by physical anatomy but also true based on genes by both parents and brain structure (we all are both male and female in terms of anatomy through genes and other biology not to mention human which bonds us all) that is the only science related issue I can get behind on the right and barely so. What about all the other science they are against? How do you as a wafer eating Christian and your party show belief in science and push policies that support science? The comment was people that believe in supernatural things are hard to convince of facts and I think this is a true scientific observation.

I identified myself as a DP. Why do you think I'm a Republican? My party is pro-choice, pro-vaccine, anti-death penalty, pro-LGBTQ+ and all equal rights. I believe in God and science, as do many. My concept of God is not a dude with a with beard on a cloud, my religion doesn't believe a wafer has human DNA (it is incredibly ignorant to think Catholics believe that), and when people start their debate assuming such nonsense, it really is hard to want to converse. But I'm still here.

But did you read the linked article about why PP was wrong about the Zombie Jesus issue?

My apologies. It is “living” Jesus flesh, not dead Jesus flesh. Not symbolic, that’s an Anglican thing. My childhood teachings are getting as stale as the Sunday wafer.

Still nonsense. Sorry if that hurts. Stay out of my uterus, that hurts me.

I'm not in your uterus. I'm Pro-choice. So please stop treating me like an enemy, and try to her what I'm telling you. You clearly did not read the article and are maintaining a fundamental and bigoted misunderstanding. What do you hope to gain from that?

I really don’t care about your special rituals. But I’m glad you agree the government should stay out of people’s uteruses. If you stopped funding these efforts that would be even better.

If you think we need "belief" in science or we need to "support" science then you do not understand science. We should always question which is the root of all science.

We should. But the very definition of faith is accepting the unprovable and unknowable. And many “faiths” support questioning only to the extent that it deepens faith and commitment to it. No one supports their parishioners questioning themselves right on out.

DP: I can only speak to Catholicism, which is certainly counter to what you suggest. In fact the opposite of what you state is the premise of what scholars call the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. My understanding is that the Jewish Talmudic tradition is quite similar, though I know far less about it. Faith is at the core, but that is not at all contrary to science and the study of what we can know and scientifically prove - if fact it demands such depth of inquiry and research. It's probably why the Big Bang Theory was first articulated by a Catholic priest and scholar, Fr. Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître. In studying metaphysics, epistemology, science, using the tools of logic and scientific inquiry, we may always come to the dead end, perhaps only temporary, where we then have to rely on forming new theories and faith, the belief that there is more to know and likely more than we can ever know, demands that we keep going. And yes, that's the hard stuff. But we never stop search and trying to prove and learn and we change with what we discover.

I get that not everyone raised in any given faith fully comprehends this, as most people stop leaning in early adolescence. But it is incorrect to say that all faiths discourage questioning and secular learning.

Catholicism definitely promotes trust in a hierarchy.

One of the reasons for the Protestant Reformation, actually.

What efforts do you think I fund? I contribute to the DNC and a host of charitable organizations that help people in need. Why are you making things up about me instead of continuing the conversation? If you don't want to have a conversation, fine, but you have made a bunch of assumptions in this thread that are wrong.

And if you don't care to know about the things you mock, maybe we should just not mock or discuss what we haven't tried to know anything about? That way we don't undermine the better things we are trying to convey.

Catholicism definitely promotes trust in a hierarchy.

One of the reasons for the Protestant Reformation, actually.

The Catholic Church has a hierarchy, just as our government does, or a school, or a corporation. It has its place and role, for sure. But it also teaches the Catholic Ethical Tradition, by which individual conscience is the ultimate subjective norm of all human action. And the individual must act to study and inform their own conscience so that it is guided by morally defensible reason. Vatican II made clear that the church as a whole shares Scripture and tradition, not only the hierarchy or Church leadership. "All the members of the church share in the priestly, prophetic, and royal offices of Christ and therefore have their own part to play in the mission of the church." (AA 2). Dissent from noninfallible teaching is expected, as it is undeniable that Church leaders make mistakes, sometimes criminal and grave mistakes. Topics worthy of study and discussion, to be sure.

So again, it is incorrect to say the Catholic Church discourages questioning, it expects it and teaches it as an ethical duty of each individual.

And I will join you, and continue to fund organizations that support homeless teens, fight human trafficking, and provide services to the LGBTQ+ community and democratic causes generally. As it happens, living in the DMV, I know quite a few Catholic families with gay and a few trans kids, and happily, they are supportive of their children and none of them have kicked them out; but in the unlikely case that they did, the kids know they'd be welcome in our home or the homes of most people I know. It's very sad that not everyone has an open and loving heart, but on the whole, I think most people you know in real life are good people.

In Germany, the Nazi base drew far more heavily from the Protestants than from the Catholics.

Christian Nationalism is more associated with Protestantism than Catholicism so that tracks.

“Matthew MacWilliams, a doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, conducted a poll in which Republicans were asked four questions about child-rearing. With each question, respondents were asked which of two traits were more important in children:

independence or respect for their elders;
curiosity or good manners;
self-reliance or obedience;
being considerate or being well-behaved.

Psychologists use these questions to identify people who are disposed to favor hierarchy, loyalty and strong leadership — those who picked the second trait in each set — what experts call "authoritarianism." That many of Trump's supporters share this trait helps explain the success of his unconventional candidacy and suggests that his rivals will have a hard time winning over his adherents.”

So you'll see this in just about every Asian culture. Does this mean republicans are Asian?

I can't believe you people

Agreed. Here we have a bunch of UMC liberal white women opining about the “psychology” of people who support the MAGA movement when they likely don’t even know one person who voted for Trump.
Instead of focusing on the issues important to people they go full on character assassination.
And they wonder why they lost…..

The two Trumpers in my family are both dead now. In separate years, they decided they knew better than the doctors and experts, and checked themselves out of the hospital AMA. That decision killed them.

You can get back to rejecting anything from The Man while licking the boots of The Man. It’s a good look.

Education is highly valued in Asian cultures.

MAGA not so much

I don't see too many Asians going after degrees in Ethnic or Gender Studies, Communications, or Art History.

You must only know the ones who come here for tech jobs. You'll find ones with cultural based degrees back in the land they immigrated from. Probably held by the wealthy, therefore aspirational.

His base is uneducated and they like his rambling and aggressive talk filled with racist overtones, nationalism, and emphasis on getting things done that THEY want to see done: which is getting rid of browns and putting blacks in their place, and making sure whites are taken care of and are able to enjoy as many mayo sandwiches as they want for the rest of their lives. Too many administrations did nothing and had a lot of unfulfilled promises. He does do a few things they like so he keeps stringing them along. Also, his base loves drama and violence at a Game of THrones level so this is what they want anyways.
