House Cleaning Rates in 2025

Anonymous wrote:A few years ago we used a company (you see their cars around here), paid $229 for every 3 weeks (looks like bi-weekly rate was $215) for 1600 sf, not dirty, no pets, and it would take two women less than an hour.

Said they would clean windows and oven during first-time deep cleaning, did not—
Said they’d mop weekly, and despite my emailing frequent reminders, often did not—
Said they’d use eco-friendly products, but just splashed bleach in bathrooms—
Did not dust, change sheets, or do dishes or laundry.
3 different women in teams of two, only one understood minimal English—

My MIL uses an individual cleaning person and pays a similar rate in cash for her 3600sq ft home so I’ll be going that route for this new house.

I hired one of those for a first-time cleaning of a very small house no pets no kids. Quote was 325. Fine. Two workers, there less than two hours, and they didn't deep clean anything. It was all surface and not very sanitized. The epitome of hotel cleaning- make it "look clean". No mopping, just spray and wipe floors. Never had them back.

I pay what the cleaner asked me to pay. $40 an hour is actually a very decent wage. It takes virtually no skill to do the job.

Feel free to make your cleaner the beneficiary of your 401K and life insurance for all I care.

You're not only kinda disgusting for saying this, but you're also wrong. Some cleaners are much better than others.

We just got a quote of $160/biweekly for regular cleaning of our home. The lady said she will be coming on her own, and it will take about 4-5 hours. Our home is a little less than 2000 sq. ft., 3 levels, 2 bedrooms, and 2.5 bathrooms. We also have 2 dogs. Is this a reasonable quote? Should I shop around more to see if I can get a lower quote?

Thank you in advance!

Yes. This is good price. Your cost is wee bit high, that I suspect is mainly because of you having two dogs. Fur, dander, slobber, food, paw prints, nose snot on french doors + the dog smell. And she is providing the cleaning supplies. It is really hard to wash the rags if you have too much dog fur on it and it also takes a toll on the vacuum.

- I pay $140/biweekly for regular cleaning. No dogs, no pets, no shoes indoors, no smoking, no small kids. Mainly empty nesters.
- I provide the cleaning supplies because I won't want a cleaner using the same cleaning supplies (vacuum, broom, rags) that she uses to clean a house with pets.
- 3000+ sq ft. I make my own beds. 3 1/2 bathrooms. 4 bedrooms. Family room, study, living room, dining room, breakfast room, kitchen foyer. Wood floors everywhere. So she has to vacuum and mop. She cleans the blinds and windows (from inside) every time. Does not clean inside of fridge or inside of the oven.

Lol. I’ve never seen so much hatred for animals squished into a random post not about animals. Congrats!

Yeah, until the cleaner takes the steel wool to your stainless steel appliances or Windex to your upright piano. True stories.

Paying more for a cleaner does nothing to avoid what you describe. I am sure like any service there are extremely high end cleaners that probably charge thousands and know how to clean your Tiffany silver, your Steinway, etc...but a cleaner that charges $70/hour isn't charging that because they are more highly skilled than the $40 cleaner, but just because enough people will pay that in a certain neighborhood.

PP. I used to work as a cleaner. If you pay more, you’ll get a more intelligent cleaner, and a higher chance that they’ll turn their brain on when working.

$40 an hour is more than a decent wage for a cleaner.

I’ll say it again, it takes very little skill to do the cleaning. You’re just dumb. It’s ok that it takes little to no skill. We need jobs like that too.

Again…not sure why people are treating a cleaner any different than someone who cuts your grass or cleans your gutters.

You want a house cleaner…you get some referrals…person comes over and looks at your house and gives you a price. You may or may not go with the lowest price.

However if someone quotes me a rate that works out to $40/hour, I’m not arbitrarily going to say, you know what, I will pay you 75% more than that.

Much the same I don’t offer to pay someone 75% more to mow my lawn just for shits and giggles.

I stopped cleaning my house during COVID and never went back to the weekly cleaning ladies.

It’s not a hard skill to learn and if I have questions on how to clean something I watch a YouTube video.

There’s a reason why most cleaning ladies are Hispanic immigrants who have little command of the English language.

^^^ Started cleaning my house, I mean.

Very reasonable.

We pay a little more for a similar size house - 2 people that spend about 3 hrs.

For those that have a consistent cleaning crew come on a regular schedule, have they ever raised their rates?
Anonymous
That is a bargain, OP.

Yes. I posted earlier. We’ve had the same ladies for 10 years this fall, the owner (who is one the cleaners) raises the rate $5 every fall, I’m waiting for the announcement to come for next month. Currently pay $195, it was $150 when we started.

I recently hired a new cleaner who can recommended by several neighbors. I am paying $180 every two weeks for a 3 story house with 4 bedrooms and a finished basement. About 4k sq ft. She brings the same assistant each time and stays about 2.5 hours. I paid double for the first visit for a deep clean and they stayed 5 hours.

How many jobs take the skill of a doctor? Not many. People get a job they are trained and they do it. I will bet you over inflate the skill needed to do your job.

It’s supply and demand. If you don’t want to clean you will need to hire someone. They will charge what they charge.
