You’re sooo urban and sophisticated! |
stats? recent? Any particular hooks? |
Not real recent, but excellent grades in tough classes at a top DMV public. Strong but not outrageous test scores and solid extracurriculars. No hooks. |
I know there are Grinnell haters on the forum but this is just crazy talk. The schools have their specialties but nobody is going to say those schools are “better” than Grinnell across the board. |
These schools are all absolute peers. I graduated from Grinnell. My kids go to Kenyon and Denison. When choosing between these schools, it’s about fit. They are all equally good in terms of academics and getting into grad school. Grinnell much more quirky and woke. Denison has far more normal types. Kenyon closer to Denison in terms of normal kids. Macalester closer to Grinnell in terms of liberal quirk. Depends on what you want. Grinnell also is by far most isolated of the 4. |
| Grinnell’s main event is the Mary-B-Jane Ball where the students all cross dress. Not a niche thing. It’s an all campus event. At alumni weekend, they bring in the drag queens. Grinnell wears the culture wars on its sleeve. Some may like that. Others may get tired of it. |
Are you pretty conservative? Not trying to be mean - more a bit worried. DC is really interested in it but is a pretty “normy” kind of kid (although has some LGBTQ friends so isn’t “anti” that vibe at all), not a theatre or hyper political type of kid. |
I believe that this is a thing, but I never heard about it from my kid. DC was pretty excited about the party where everyone came dressed like Adam Sandler, though. To each their own, I say, |
Nobody considers them peers. It doesn’t matter that you went to Grinnell. |
DP. Obviously some people do. They’re right here in this thread. It doesn’t matter. They’re all good schools. Kids are lucky to have so many good schools to choose from. |
I’m not conservative but I also don’t want to dissuade you from Grinnell. It’s a great school. Academics are top notch. But everyone is extremely liberal. No moderate views. Moderates are not allowed, and forget about conservatives. It’s a lot like Oberlin in that way. Or Reed or Vassar. That may be fine for some. Many kids can and do just keep their heads down. Denison and Kenyon have more viewpoint diversity. That’s important to me. |
lol. You are drinking g some serious Grinnell kool aid. You realize that no one has heard of any of these school? Right? All are great. All lead to excellent grad schools. Grinnell definitely no better than the others. |
| Grinnell is a nice liberal arts school. Also super woke. No one confusing it with Harvard and I say that as a Grinnell alum. |
Ask a WASP administrator if they consider Grinnell a peer and they’ll say yes. Then ask them if they consider Kenyon to be one. Grinnell’s endowment is as big as the other three endowments combined |
No one is confusing it with Kenyon either. |
