Everyone one of you people nattering on about safety has a rear camera that allows you to back up with certainty that nothing is behind you or coming your way. The insistence on backing into parking spaces in parking garages is a ridiculous affectation, and when you do it with a line of people behind you, it's rude.
Here's the difference between the waiting that is done when you back in versus the waiting that is done when you back out. When you back in, everyone behind you has to wait for you (and IME, 90% of you can't get it on the first try). When you back out, *you* wait until the coast is clear, instead of making everyone else wait. Are you ass-first people also the ones who don't know how to zipper merge? Maddening. |
| It’s unsafe to pass an open parking space, stop suddenly, and then start driving in reverse if you’ve done nothing to indicate that’s what you were going to do. All I ask if you’re going to back into a space is that you give me some sort of heads up. I’m not a mind reader. Slow down and use a turn signal. |

Geometry isn't your strong suit. |
You are the narcissist, OP. Backing into a parking lot makes it easier to leave the spot safely. Lots of people ignore cars trying to back out of spots, making it dangerous for both backing vehicle and the idiots who walk past a backing-out vehicle. I had a woman WITH A BABY in her arms get offended when I didn't notice her immediately. Blame narcissists like her, not the drivers who want to minimize potential problems. |
Not everyone has back up cameras. Also it’s not always easy to see if there is something/someone behind you. People, including little kids, walk behind you without warning. Tinted windows in the vehicles next to you prevent you from seeing down the lane. People drove through parking lots too fast. People get road rage if you start to pull out they were not in your view. People should choose the safest option under the circumstances and that might be backing into a parking space even though it causes a minor inconvenience for others. Accidents cause far greater inconvenience that a second back up. |

People who can't effectively park backing in also can't effectively park forward. So you'll be waiting either way. But, it is much safer and more efficient when leaving a spot you've backed into than one that you've parked in forward.

I don't have a problem with it if you can do it quickly. It's the drivers who don't know how to back into spots that are infuriating because it takes them multiple attempts and wastes everyone's time.
Same for people who have no clue how to parallel park. If you can zip in quickly, that's fine. If we have to sit there in a traffic back-up watching your 8th attempt to pull into the spot when it's clear you have no idea how to do it, that is not cool. And I will be laying on the horn. |
Yep. This is my only issue. INDICATE you plan to back up. |
Wrong on two counts: 1. Many, many people don't have rear cameras. I drive a 2010 Toyota without one. It's hardly the oldest car on the road. 2. Backup cameras do not show you who is coming - you cannot use your camera to look left or right the way you can out a windshield, it only looks immediately behind. You have to inch out while checking blind spots and mirrors and camera if you have one, and hope some pedestrian or speeding car isn't just out of sight behind the neighboring car's bumper. It's far more dangerous. If you were a careful driver who looked out for backing cars, you wouldn't think backing in was slower. But you believe you can just blow by those moving reverse lights and trust that the car edging its butt out blindly will brake before they hit you. That's the actual difference in wait time. |
| OP sounds like they do not know how to drive properly. sigh. |
Can I just say I love honking my horn? It's so satisfying. |

I have no rear camera, and back in for safety when pulling out. Also do it on the first try and I think, quickly (am from NY, do everything in a hurry 😉)
What makes me nuts are the people who swing wide left to turn right |

Sometimes it is actually easier to back in given the turning radius of the car.
I started backing in a. Few years ago and it really is easier. |
| Backing in is using your executive functioning by saving you time upon exit. You just pull out with great viewing vantage. |
