They can leave the union. The talk is Washington, Oregon and California leaving the Union and joining Canada as three provinces. Trump and the Republicans will happy let them go. All republicans hate California and the west coast.

Yet, there are millions of Rs in the west coast.

If CA ever moved to Canada, we might actually move back to CA.

the only problem with that map is that parts of PA and VA would likely want in...and what would happen to the college football conferences? Because that matters to a lot of MAGAs.

Yes. Virginia wants in. Probably Illinois too. Though it makes the map awkward.

Half of VA would not want in.

So we can get rid of the worst parts?

Wait a minute, maybe I am warming up to this idea.

Republicans are for States rights until they aren’t.

Exactly. Money equals power. Where is the money in VA? NP

The state of California has jurisdiction over the payroll processors which transfer withholdings to the IRS.

The courts with jurisdiction are in California.

Pass a law requiring all businesses in California to pay all federal withholding/taxes into an escrow managed by the state to be used to pay the federally legislatively allocated funds. Shift the burden of compliance from individuals to the state.

Just learned this upthread. This should be amplified.

The more people know that CA actually has financial leverage here, the worse this is for Trump.

I didn't realize how much funds from the economic engine of the state--NOVA--benefit sparsely populated, less productive parts of the state until I had occasion to drive around rural areas of the state and was shocked at the nice, newly paved roads and pristine new public school buildings. And yet those tend to be the parts of the state that vote red. Let them pull themselves up by their own bootstraps before they use NOVA's tax revenues.

Schools in Virginia are built through bonds. At least, in Fairfax County. I'm guessing it is the same throughout.
There are lots of beautiful schools in FCPS. And, some that are not very beautiful. I'm assuming that is the same in the rural areas, as well.

The big problem with the map is Colorado and New Mexico. They would want to join California but are cut off. Maybe a deal could be reached with Mexico for free movement? Texas has a very strong independent movement. They will not join California movement to Canada but would leave at the same time.

I think most people would be very excited and supportive of this.

I am moving to CA the moment they secede.

The fact that we can even have a rational discussion about this is scary AF.

So the join Canada thing is pretty interesting. It would make Canada have the 3 highest GDP in the world. The US still be first but tied with China followed by the EU and Canada.
Anonymous
There is talk Canada may join the EU...THAT would be interesting too.

Why are we looking at this at the state level. A huge chunk of CO has voted for handjob beobert multiple times.

California is like any other state - urban areas blue the rest red. California itself would break up before seceding. So would most states.

There aren't borders that can be protected. On the other hand a civil war now would destroy the US economy, and the public would see Trump as the reason it happened. I don't think it gets that far, but it also isn't out of the realm of possibility.

As it is, state compacts between CA/OR/WA already make a trading block and the same has or is happening with eastern states, so perhaps Russia gets its fever dream of a weaker north America.

I never thought I would ever say this but if it takes another civil war to get rid of Trump and MAGA then do what is necessary. Sending the National Guard as ND Marines into California WITHOUT being asked by the governor has already destroyed democracy. It was death by a thousand stabs until this happened. Now it is a stab to the very heart of our democracy.

Unless the supreme Court acts to stop Trump then the United States of America is dead in the water and we are sinking faster than the Titanic.
