California vs federal government

There is nothing California can do. They are a powerful state, but against the other 49 not so much.

They can leave the union. The talk is Washington, Oregon and California leaving the Union and joining Canada as three provinces. Trump and the Republicans will happy let them go. All republicans hate California and the west coast.

They can withhold federal funds. As the economic powerhouse of the US it would get some attention.

Putting aside the legal issues, how would they actually do that? People and companies send their federal taxes directly to the federal government. They don’t go through the California state government first. So how would California “withhold” it?

Paraphrasing another post elsewhere:

The state of California has jurisdiction over the payroll processors which transfer withholdings to the IRS.

The courts with jurisdiction are in California.

Pass a law requiring all businesses in California to pay all federal withholding/taxes into an escrow managed by the state to be used to pay the federally legislatively allocated funds. Shift the burden of compliance from individuals to the state.

There are a lot of serials to work out, but it could be done.

Yeah don’t count on all 49 states. Maybe some of the red states near California support destroying California. Texas wants outs of the union and will do anything to break the country up.

The economic engines of the USA would stand with the current political leaders of CA.

But it would not come to that.

Wait, you think that others wouldn’t join? To escape…this?

Yet, there are millions of Rs in the west coast.

If CA ever moved to Canada, we might actually move back to CA.

It wouldn't be "against 49" and the fact of the matter is, they have the ports and the 5th largest economy in the world on its own.

the only problem with that map is that parts of PA and VA would likely want in...and what would happen to the college football conferences? Because that matters to a lot of MAGAs.

Anything done to California will push the country in to recession.

Los Angeles by itself has a GDP of 1.29 trillion and a population 3.8 million. If Los Angeles was a state it would rank 5th in GDP and 29th in population.

Yes. Virginia wants in. Probably Illinois too. Though it makes the map awkward.

If LA County was a state it would be the 11th most populous.

People who want to be part of Canada rather than Gilead will have to move quickly and seek refuge in those Canadian US states. Otherwise, their women will end up as either a Handmaid, a Wife, a Martha, or a prostitute.
