Catholics: What do you think of Trump's self-depiction as Pope?

The Vatican response was awesome.

They said he couldn’t be Pope because he wasn’t of sound mind.

This is the circus he does when they are up to no good elsewhere. This is just a distraction. Like Canada and Greenland and the Gulf.

Focus on things that matter; I’m Catholic and I know this doesn’t matter and is small bore of what anti-Christian actions he undertakes

Same. My kids go to Catholic school and I really want to ask the parents who are big supporters what they think. But I won’t.

It wasn’t funny and it was incredibly disrespectful and tone death. Pope just died so if it was a joke, it was a rude joke.

On the other hand, you’ve got Washington state passing a law that requires priests to become mandatory reporters without an exception for confession, essentially making it illegal to keep the seal of confession. That is a direct attack on the church and something that Catholics should find truly offensive.

This is a ridiculous non-issue. It won’t/can’t be enforced w/r/t confessions and that’s patently obvious. They should be mandated reporters for other purposes. And in fact the Virtus training pretty much requires all Catholics who work with children to report basically anything already.

They explicitly eliminated clergy privileged communications from the bill, meaning priests are required by law to report information learned in confession. They do intend to enforce it.

In fact, none of the Catholics I know voted for him. My mother who is beyond religious — Catholic HS and college, Sodality, St Vincent volunteer, Eucharistic minister, CCD teacher, dozens of crosses and large paintings of virgin through house, weekly mass, daily novenas and rosaries, regularly hosted priests at our house growing up, best friend was a nun, etc etc —- thinks he is the most disgusting, morally offensive person she has ever encountered. My father, rest in peace, agreed. It’s just such a depressing statement about the church that any Catholic could have voted for him, especially this time around. He whole platform is “screw other people, then make a joke about it.”

My relative is a nun, and no one in the convent voted for him.

Real Catholics don’t vote for him.

Catholics who have made money a false god do.

One thing that bugs me is people who otherwise don't give a damn about Catholicism using it as a political battering ram.

When Sinead O'Connor ripped the picture of JPII, she got death threats and pretty much cancelled. She was protesting the cover up of child sexual abuse in the Church. It was a righteous protest. Trump AI'd as a Pope is disrespectful. Let's see him as Muhummamed and see what happens...

I think he's essentially a comic performer. A lot of people think he's funny. I don't, but this is typical for him. He likes to stoke outrage and intentionally provoke people. Kind of like a professional wrestler.

Liberal catholic - offended by this but to be fair, I am offended by most things Trump does. Can't stand the hypocrisy of the catholics for trump crowd- how do you reconcile loving your neighbor by deporting them, ending aide, taking their jobs....

there is something especially low about mocking the dead and religion.

Catholic here and I think it really showed how far we have fallen as a society. I'm sure a lot of politicians have been horrible people but at least they knew to not do something like this. The fact that the president of the United States can now proudly do crap like this just shows that the average American is beyond hope.

Trump hating Catholic here. I am kind of glad he did it because I think it shows who he is, and maybe will be another thing that opens the eyes of some of the more conservative wing of the church.

Having said that, this is disrespectful, and ridiculous, but it’s not like making a picture of himself as Muhammad. It’s not sacrilege. I know Catholics who have dressed their babies in Pope costumes for Halloween. The outfit is not sacred. Changing the Bible to include political messages and selling them was far more sacrilegious than this.

oh sure. I'm sure if Biden did this you'd be like, "oh it doesn't matter".
