Catholics: What do you think of Trump's self-depiction as Pope?

This seems to come up very often and yes, of course we would prefer that Trump act more dignified, not fall for flattery so easily, and not have been such a womanizer in the past. But the fact that he is not that person doesn't mean we'd be happy with Kamala Harris running the country.

The mental gymnastics here is amazing.

He and his policies are antithetical to all of the most fundamental teachings of Catholicism, and depicting himself as the Pope is offensive and gross.

It’s like number 1000 on the list of offensive things he has done. He’s a really really awful person. I don’t know how any Catholic could vote for him. In fact, none of the Catholics I know voted for him. My mother who is beyond religious — Catholic HS and college, Sodality, St Vincent volunteer, Eucharistic minister, CCD teacher, dozens of crosses and large paintings of virgin through house, weekly mass, daily novenas and rosaries, regularly hosted priests at our house growing up, best friend was a nun, etc etc —- thinks he is the most disgusting, morally offensive person she has ever encountered. My father, rest in peace, agreed. It’s just such a depressing statement about the church that any Catholic could have voted for him, especially this time around. He whole platform is “screw other people, then make a joke about it.”

While it might have changed by the 3rd time he ran, at least the 1st time actually observant Christians were less likely to support him than cultural Christians.

One thing that bugs me is people who otherwise don't give a damn about Catholicism using it as a political battering ram.

I don't like Catholicism, but I dislike anyone making fun of a good person who recently died.

You and your husband are on the wrong side of history.

Well, Catholics are known for being complete hypocrites so at least they'll be with their people.

The Pope is not a single person, it’s a position. Head of the Catholic Church.

It’s stupid and funny and we can all move on to the next dumb tweet. There are real problems in the world.

Trump has done worse things. But still, this is bad.

It’s stupid and he does stupid things. In the end though, it’s pretty inconsequential.

On the other hand, you’ve got Washington state passing a law that requires priests to become mandatory reporters without an exception for confession, essentially making it illegal to keep the seal of confession. That is a direct attack on the church and something that Catholics should find truly offensive.

I'm Catholic. I'm not a Trump supporter. I dislike it and it reinforces to me the lack of respect, empathy, kindness, and dignity that is at the core of who Trump is.

My Catholic Trump supporting family were unphased by this.

But I think that is to be expected...this is exactly who Trump is and who we have all known him to be, if you support him this won't change your opinion, and if you don't support him this won't change your opinion.

I’m not talking about Catholics. I’m talking about one man. And for you to respond to an accurate post about one man by insulting an entire group of 1 billion people is really telling.

This is a ridiculous non-issue. It won’t/can’t be enforced w/r/t confessions and that’s patently obvious. They should be mandated reporters for other purposes. And in fact the Virtus training pretty much requires all Catholics who work with children to report basically anything already.

By womanizer do you mean rapist? Because that’s what he is. You voted for a rapist.

Look up a photo of Steven Cheung, who runs the WH social media accounts.

It will explain a lot.

Unfazed. Learn to spell correctly.

And your family are bad people. And terrible Catholics.
