If you're good with secondhand, The Real Real, Thredup, and eBay are some good places to try! You have to be good with secondhand and willing put in the time searching. |
This is not a flex. |
Yup, I buy all my special occasion dresses secondhand, generally on the Real Real. I pretty much only wear silk for weddings, etc since it looks polished and breathes nicely. Silk looks much better than synthetics. If you know your size in the particular designer that's great, but it can make sense to order up and get tailored. I get most special occasion dresses tailored even if it's just to shorted the straps. OP, search by brand for dresses in your size. Filter by length (mini, midi, maxi) and then you can sort by price if you want. Keep in mind that designer sizes run smaller than mall sizes. I'd look at Sea New York, Ulla Johnson, Saloni, Cara Cara and Zimmerman for the party you're talking about. |
Silk is hot. |

| I just came back to all of these great replies- thanks all. Excited to look through all of this. Love this board for ideas! |
My HHI is ~$300k, and the only occasion I'd consider spending that kind of money on a dress would be for my own children's weddings. I max out around $300. |
At that HHI yes I think you should be spending more on a dress for a wedding, these days. |
Ugh no. Italians can do what they want but as an American I’m keeping to my feminine style. Life’s too short not to enjoy a frilly dress at a special occasion! |
Feels shocking to say we have an HHI of about $300k as well but I can't imagine spending that much money on a dress! Maybe I'm just not invited to fancy enough weddings and parties where I feel like it would make sense to do that. |
