MCEA warns members that MECCA Business Learning Institute (MBLI) may not be ready

Anonymous
The 21 teaching positions posted April 10 are still there, as is the principal position posted on May 1. Since MLBI makes the hiring decisions, but MCPS has to actually process the hiring, for observers it’s unclear what is happening. Maybe they are waiting to hire a principal before hiring teachers. Maybe they are hiring people from outside MCPS and it is taking a while to process. Maybe no one has applied. Maybe no one understands this process and it’s just a mess. Who knows?

It seems like the community at large deserves an update. I mean other schools that had an opening this close had already named their principal. Based on the articles O’m not sure this school even has a location.

As of today 6/9/25, the Principal and 21 instructional staff positions are still posted on Careers.

This article
https://educationsuperhero.substack.com/p/trying-to-find-mecca-without-a-compass says "Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services finally approved a permit to do work to convert the Goldenrod Lane location from a “Commercial Building” to an “Educational Building” on May 21, 2025." But "As of the writing of this article[June 8], MBLI is still waiting on approval for whatever upgrades need to be made to the fire alarm system and electrical wiring." The article goes on to discuss that MBLI may be looking at temporary back-up facilities, but that may require a very long bus ride and it's unclear how that will be provided.

So, still a lot of uncertainty as to what is actually happening.

My prediction is that they won't be ready to open on time and families will default back to their home schools in August. But then that may cause class size/staffing issues if the potential MBLI students were concentrated at a few schools in the Germantown/ Gaithersburg area.

I posted it, and no name bc I didn’t write it. I came across it today and I know people had questions here so I dropped the link while running out the door in case anyone found it interesting. You’re right-the fact that it’s anonymous isn’t great-though the author does at least acknowledge their bias.

Shiree Slade appointed as principal of the MECCA Business Learning Institute Public Charter School today (6/24). Yang said “Welcome to MCPS”, so I presume she’s some of the non-MCPS staff that MBLI has said they had interested in the charter.

Getting a principal appointed is a positive step for MBLI. Hopefully they get it together for the opening this school year.

Good! They would just kill the school. Someone outside might actually care about children.

Were students able to apply for the lottery for placement for this coming school year?
