Will MCPS stand against ICE?

Sorry, I'm not helping ICE do their dirty work.

They're children. You're absolutely vile.

Unlikely the children are illegal immigrants. Most likely the parents are, and the children are being taken in order to keep families together.

Would you rather have them take the parents and leave the children behind to fend for themselves? That's ridiculous.

If the children are not illegal immigrants then ICE cannot round them up. If the children are US citizens, they may be afforded the "opportunity" to be deported with their parents, but they cannot be forced to be deported. Parents can opt to arrange for kinship or guardian care or put them in the foster system. We do not deport US citizens, even those with illegal immigrant parents.

Yep. And many of the kids in MCPS schools are born in the US so they are US citizens. ICE is not coming after them.

Their parents might be her illegally, in which case they will need to decide what to do with their children.

Oh what a great opportunity! Leave the only home you've ever known, or get separated from your parents! You're so noble to afford them that opportunity!

ICE coming into elementary schools, No f*** way. Very few elementary-aged children in this county are here illegally.

Now middle and high school is another story. Lots of them here without parents living with cousins/aunts/uncles extended family. Bye bye.

This. The ES aged kids in question have mostly been born here (to undocumented parents) and are US citizens.

But plenty of HS aged kids from all over the world who are here in the US illegally.

+1 This PP is unbelievable! First of all, these children are entitled to their privacy! Do you really think they want their classmates to know this awful, traumatic thing is happening to their family?! And what kind of message would you sending with your "kindness" and "drives"? It sounds like it would be"Aw, we are sorry that you have to move to a country where your life will be completely different and your living conditions may be awful, but here's some nice, new luggage to make things better!"

Sorry, the original PP's post didn't copy along with the above one!

1. Because it’s traumatic to students and their peers

2. It’s dangerous as students could think there is a shooter

3. Students may start dropping out or not coming to school.

4. They are innocent kids and won’t even have their parents during the event.

There are plenty of illegal immigrants here with young kids not born here. They are also taking away birthrite citizenship.

But the fact you don’t think middle or high schoolers will be traumatized from these events is ridiculous.

MCPS really cannot oppose federal law. But, they can and should make sure that all legally required procedures are followed. I know the county and MCPS have been planning for this. Schools administrators should known exactly what is legally required and should make sure ICE follows those rules to the letter. They can do everything they legally can do to make ICE’s job harder within legal limits. I think it is shameful that ICE is now allowed access to schools. It is one thing to pick up illegal immigrants when they are released from prison and then deport them but something very else to stage round ups at schools.

So you prefer the legal aged gang members at these schools, who are likely selling drugs to your kids, to be left alone until they do something bad enough to get put in prison?

The MC PTA held a Zoom meeting to help support undocumented students who are here in MCPS.

CASA sent someone to speak on Jan 22.

I’m sure CASA and the PTA will work together to do many more of these.

Another voice to say that children will not be somehow grabbed and sent away. If ICE comes it would be because they already have their parents and there is no parent waiting at home for them after school anymore.

There absolutely are undocumented children in our schools. While it might be more common for the kids to be legal and the parents to be undocumented, there are plenty of undocumented kids in the system too.

Yes. There are kids at my school that walked from Central and South America to the U.S. border. And ICE knows where they are. I’ve worried all this week.
