This is the right answer. |
I have an MBA from a top school and I agree with this poster. If you don't have your own business ideas and drive, classes aren't the best way to jumpstart that. |
Right. That is why it looks like OP was making the connection to peer groups and not classes… |
| Assuming money and tuition is not an issue, this is such a no brainer. Kid is not sure what to study. Maybe Business. But he is not a direct admit to Kelley or Smeal. Is there even a question here? Tulane is the right move for any of the majors mentioned here, specially business as you dont have to worry about admission to Freeman. |
PP. Understood but who thinks rich friends hand out money like candy to acquaintances who lack compelling business ideas? |
| Peer groups from top schools are not really what’s needed for entrepreneurship. You’d be better off just looking for funding from VCs. It doesn’t matter that your undergrad roommate’s family is rich or you have tons of UMC buddies there—- that’s not how you build a business and become an entrepreneur. |
So are you suggesting OP’s kid attend any of those 4 schools and neither would provide even the slightest advantage over the other? So what is your suggestion to OP? |
Bullcrap…Sure nobody said that is what is NEEDED for entrepreneurship. Plus it depends on a million factors. What industry, location, etc etc etc. But to pretend wealthy buddies do not matter is very naive…..A wealthy buddy is not going to fund the whole growth….but will help you kickstart the business before it gets to the point it s ready for VC funding. This is exactly what happened to me and several of my friends. Half of them started their business with college buddies that were wealthy that helped them get to the next level before VC funding took over. Don’t be naive…. I’m willing to bet small wealthy private schools do a LOT better on startup per capita than massive state universities. |
And I’m willing to bet the vast majority of those start ups weren’t financed by wealthy classmates. Don’t be naive… |
| I’ve visited all four campuses and Indiana is the best looking/feeling. I went to a T10 school myself but when I toured IU with my son I thought “In my next life I’m going to college here!” |
I don’t think anyone is suggesting this though. A few people said some programs that offer entrepreneurship as a major have good resources or can offer the kids interesting opportunities. But no one said to choose based on classes, or even to major solely in entrepreneurship. |
| Tulane is pretty expensive - I think my friend is paying 85k a year now all in. I’d knock out PSU for the 2+2. Wait and see with OSU. My kid is also currently pre biz at Kelley waiting for appeal results, also in direct at Purdue, Pitt and waiting on OSU. Standard admit does make me nervous even though he’s never gotten less than a B and has 11 APs- it’s just a big risk since he’s set on business. We are going to go visit IU this spring, haven’t been there. |
West Virginia has 30% more Rhodes Scholars than Tulane. I guess those Kids from Appalachia are fairing a lot better than the kids that can only get into Tulane because of their money. |
24 for West Virginia |
