Indiana vs Penn State vs Ohio State

Hello,

DS is OOS for all 3. He is not 100% sure yet what major, but possibly business and maybe Econ. Applied TO to all 3 with a 3.8 UW GPA.

Accepted to IU PreBusiness (not Kelley yet, awaiting review) and to Penn State DUS (Not Smeal). Awaiting OSU.

Lets assume for a sec he gets in OSU.

Kid is interested in Entrepreneurship. Will likely be an entrepreneur , so not worried too much about job placements. We understand if he doesnt get Kelley he will need to apply to major later, just like Smeal and it is more difficult. That is if, he chooses Business vs Econ.

His other acceptance was Tulane as a Spring Scholar.

For those who know these places, please advise.

I guess he is a BIG 10 fan!

If he wants Business i would rank Kelley (if he gets in), OSU and then PSU.

If decides on ECON I would guess OSU, Penn State and then IU.

If decides on Business, I would just pick Tulane for entrepreneurship just because of his peers and the fact he doesnt have to be admitted to the B School like the others.

Tulane no question

Tulane oh gosh, yes... and the Freeman Business School is wonderful.

For Entrepreneurship, peers ARE a big deal in my opinion. Fair or not, you want wealthy kids around your DS if he has ideas and need help financing startup....This is more likely to occur at an expensive private school vs a public school....

Agree with this part. Though Kelley also has a business economics major if he wants to split the difference.

Some schools have entrepreneurship majors but usually you would pair it with a more substantive major (like finance or econ). Those programs have some interesting opportunities though.

What kind of entrepreneur does your kid want to be? Does he have a business or franchise in mind? Does he own one now?

Basically, and I say this as an MBA who took both entrepreneurship classes and all the other ones (finance, marketing, org behavior etc), he’s probably better off majoring or focusing on one of those other businesses topics. I feel like entrepreneurship as a major doesn’t really have much to it.

Not as a "Spring Scholar" where he misses out on friend groups crystallizing during fall freshman year and has to be the new kid in January. These spring admit programs are bull crap. Just a way for colleges to suck in more tuition dollars while preventing low-stat and test-optional admits from dragging down their freshman class profile.

Even so, the peers will still be a step above the state schools. It is not like a Spring program is a different school. AND per OP, he is not a direct admit to Kelley or Smeal, which makes Tulane the obvious choice if it was my kid.

No. This is a ridiculous answer unless there is some driving reason (like a full tuition scholarship) to select this school.

IU-Kelley is the best for undergraduate business among these 4 schools. Then OSU, then Penn State.

These are all good schools. I agree with no spring start. And I agree with him dual-majoring.

Aside from that, I think any of the schools would be great for giving him a wide, enthusiastic social network and a solid education.

My DD was admitted and visited all 3. She hated Ohio State and quickly knocked it off her list (it was her #1 before visiting). She loved Indiana’s campus as well as Penn State. She knocked Penn State off as she was offered 2+2 due to applying for business. I would check about requirements for getting into Smeal and Kelley as non direct admits.

Personally, I’d choose Tulane, but of the other 3, I would base the decision after visiting all 3 campuses- they are not the same.

Plenty of wealthy East Coast kids at Penn State. Just not exclusively wealthy kids.

Same for Indiana. OOS at these schools is often not cheap.

But in general I wouldn’t make this decision based on “want to do entrepreneurship, where are there kids that may have a financing hookup.” It’s a huge reach, and more likely to not happen than happen. And then you made a decision about your entire undergrad based on something that never materializes. You would be better off landing in a business school where you can attempt to leverage the professors and their knowledge/connections, as well as the school’s entrepreneur-oriented programs, ECs, etc.
