About a mile from the beach area there is a nice gated community https://www.qhycc.com/home/

But it's in Florida. Blech.

Queen’s Harbor is very nice but dated and there are nicer places in the area.

This is a beautiful community, family oriented and better schools.

What about along 30a, specifically watercolor or Alys beach? There’s decent healthcare not too far and access to a few airports. The big Air Force base isn’t too far, so there’s a community of retired Air Force families, too, which leads to lots of services for retired families within a 45 minute drive

Climate change makes the gulf pretty unappealing. The storms are only to get worse.

Was going to suggest this. My parents lived in La Jolla.

Were costs comparable to here? I’d love to retire there (in 30 years 😂)

Housing is very expensive and the taxes it away at a lot of your money, however groceries and daily living expenses are not bad.

PP here whose parents lived there. I'd add gas very is expensive out there (but there is no personal property tax on cars like in VA and you probably won't drive a ton in retirement) but I agree with the PP that groceries aren't bad at all at the standard chains (Vons, Ralphs, etc. and they also have Costco and Aldi out there).

California has fires, mudslides. They come on fast.
Hurricanes you have warning.
Just saying.

Climate change makes North Carolina and Tennessee unappealing too.

Sadly, lots of communities in those states suffered more devastation from the last hurricane aftermath than communities in Florida did.

If you want walkable to beach in either Santa Barbara or La Jolla then that is going to be quite expensive. Maybe 3-4 million for an house that is small and not updated. And if you have that much money prepared for very high state income tax.

Santa Barbara has a crappy little airport and you have to fight a lot of traffic to get to LAX.

I love Santa Barbara - mild weather, on the beach and a funky little downtown, with easy access to LA (although I suspect decent healthcare in SB environs, too). The vibe is more interesting to me than any place I’ve been in FL.

What is so "funky" about the downtown?

Interesting that nobody has suggested the DE beaches or anything in SC aside from HH.

What about the Charleston area beaches?
