I'd add gas very is expensive out there (but there is no personal property tax on cars like in VA and you probably won't drive a ton in retirement) but I agree with the PP that groceries aren't bad at all at the standard chains (Vons, Ralphs, etc. and they also have Costco and Aldi out there).
