I think it’s an African American/ White southerner thing. “Traditional” varies by culture and region. |
Agree. I'm black, and in my 50 years, I've never attended a Thanksgiving that didn't include mac and cheese. It's usually the star of the show. To the person who said it's not good the next day. You must make the mac and cheese you can cut like a brick. Baby, mine is thick and ooey gooey, so good the next day, and the following day too. OP, its too late now, but this is a really good recipe to follow. Please, no Velvetta, ever! https://www.thechunkychef.com/family-favorite-baked-mac-and-cheese/ |
But, there’s no reason to bake it on Wed then reheat on Thursday. Just assemble it on Wed and bake on Thursday. Then no soggy noodles that soak up all the moisture. This happens with almost all pasta dishes not just macaroni and cheese. |
I'm the person you quoted. I didn't comment either way on when it should be baked. Personally, I make mine the day of. |
So yes, it is traditional |
The pp defined traditional as not specifically not including mac and cheese so she has not made the caveat of "for you" |
Correct. |
Sorry, are you under the impression that when you place your order in a restaurant the sorcerers in the back start making a brand new Mac and cheese casserole? |
I assumed you were referring to the ubiquitous salted cod of the era, but they probably had loads of fresh seafood https://oceana.org/blog/what-did-people-eat-first-thanksgiving-probably-way-more-seafood-you-thought/ |
| Instead of mashed l! No! Must have both... |
It is a tradition not the tradition. Each family can have a tradition but that doesn't make it traditional to anyone but them. |
Because day of is best. If it was better reheated you would just do that, but of course it isn’t. |
This. It is an African American/White southern thing. The mac and cheese group also serves greens with Thanksgiving. |
You are referring to food prepared that morning, held to temp, and served the same day. This is different than “next day” reheated food. The reheated “next day” food originally described, you would find at cheap buffets, schools, and prisons. |
The largest group of people who think mac and cheese is a Thanksgiving food are African Americans. They aren't the people who serve unseasoned foods. The second largest group of people who think mac and cheese is a Thanksgiving food are people who are open to new ideas and realize that mac and cheese done right can be a delicious and decadent. |
