It's a PUBLIC university. Its mission is to educate citizens of the state.

Unlike MD and VA Arizona doesn't have a dozen mid- to lower-tier public colleges in addition to the big state schools.

They have ASU. And Northern in Flagstaff.
DP but two is not a dozen.
And all three are committed to access rather than false scarcity.

+100
Their philosophy deserves A LOT of admiration. I will say they’ve had some financial problems and cutting back programs and merit. So look into that.

Save your money and send them to ODU. It’s literally the same setup but closer and more green.

U of A isn’t a commuter school. I appreciate how laid back kids are who attend. They are smart but not balls of stress since getting into college in Arizona isn’t stressful and it seems like most kids in state go to one of the state schools and it’s a respected choice.

At the University of Arizona, approximately 80% of students live off-campus. While the university provides on-campus housing, it primarily caters to freshmen, and many students choose off-campus housing after their first year.

That doesn’t make them a commuter school. Tucson is filled with relatively cheap housing options near the U so most students live off campus in the neighborhoods around campus after their first year. They are right there just in private apartments or houses.

It’s a really good school for certain majors. I know a lot of people there who have gone on to really good graduate programs. Pre-med, geology, aerospace and some other stem fields very strong. I think ASU considered better for business majors.

NAU is 28k undergrads and ASU is 114k undergrads which is huge and more than adequate to the needs of Arizona.

UofA grad here. The poster who commented about how students there know how they rank is spot on. It’s a large, diverse school. If you’re a motivated kid, you will do very well. I attended on merit scholarship, was in honors college, graduated summa cum laude, got a competitive job on the east coast and all my colleagues were SLAC and Ivy grads. The edge I had was from my diverse exposure and ability to truly talk to anyone. It’s a very social school (dare I say - gasp! - party school) and the skill set I picked up from that is invaluable. Kids can fall off course if they aren’t self-motivated, but the ones that are will be in great company and find it very easy to excel. My college buddies are all over the map but my fellow honors college friends are in biglaw, one was a Rhodes scholar, several physicians, and many Fortune 500s (like me).

The ASU number includes online students around the country.

Why why why

Of course kids from DMV apply there however it’s really not a good idea financially.

Then again kids that go there are not smart so .,

This. It’s possible to get distracted when college feels like a resort, but any focused and motivated student will succeed. There are lots of perfectly happy and employed engineers, nurses, and business grads. It’s an amazing place to be pre-med or pre-law where you can get the grades you need and enjoy yourself while doing it. Hydrology, environmental science, astronomy, and anthropological are especially strong departments.

Oh yeah they only have 65,000 in person students which totally invalidated my comment. 🙄

Acceptance rate is not a measure of quality. It's a measure of brand appeal and marketing.

The fact is that the United States prepares far more PhD candidates than there are academic openings and the market for researchers and academics is flooded with high quality candidates. Students can get a very good education at many, MANY US schools. Our university and college system is one of the wonders of the world.

Students can get a good education at UofA. If students want to live and work on the west coast, after graduation, UofA is a better feeder school to those job markets than UVa despite UVa's higher ranking and lower acceptance rate.

+ 1 to the comment above. Outside of CS and Systems engineering.. a larger % of UVA Engineering undergrads struggle to get a job outside of the local contracting firms (CACI etc) or the govt.

U of Arizona and ASU kids have access to working in places like TSMC, Intel, Micron, Tesla, Lucid etc
