UofA grad here. The poster who commented about how students there know how they rank is spot on. It’s a large, diverse school. If you’re a motivated kid, you will do very well. I attended on merit scholarship, was in honors college, graduated summa cum laude, got a competitive job on the east coast and all my colleagues were SLAC and Ivy grads. The edge I had was from my diverse exposure and ability to truly talk to anyone. It’s a very social school (dare I say - gasp! - party school) and the skill set I picked up from that is invaluable. Kids can fall off course if they aren’t self-motivated, but the ones that are will be in great company and find it very easy to excel. My college buddies are all over the map but my fellow honors college friends are in biglaw, one was a Rhodes scholar, several physicians, and many Fortune 500s (like me).
This. It’s possible to get distracted when college feels like a resort, but any focused and motivated student will succeed. There are lots of perfectly happy and employed engineers, nurses, and business grads. It’s an amazing place to be pre-med or pre-law where you can get the grades you need and enjoy yourself while doing it. Hydrology, environmental science, astronomy, and anthropological are especially strong departments.
