When do you work out?

Early morning, that's the time I can almost always control.

WAH, work out at the end of the work day. It’s a nice way to draw the line for the day.

7 AM. My youngest is in HS and doesn’t need me in the morning. When my kids needed rides to school, I went to the gym at 9 AM. Now I’m back at work and can’t workout that late. At the end of the workday I’m too tired so first thing is the only option. However, I’m not a morning person so if that required a 5 or 6 wake-up, it wouldn’t work for me.

I've tried every schedule and my preference is either first thing in the morning before kids get up or as part of the evening routine but before kid's bedtime. Morning requires good discipline (if I hit the snooze button at all I will either have to shorten workout or postpone shower until after kids get dropped off-- not ideal) and evening workout requires assist from partner (I can workout while he makes dinner or does kids bath routines and then we trade off).

I can't do lunchtime because my work is too unpredictable and stuff comes up too often-- it just doesn't happen a lot of days.

5:30 AM. Either a 45 minute class or 45 minutes on the treadmill. Three young kids; first one on the bus t 6:55. I'm freaking tired. But I get it in. Work full time.

I need to drive my kid to school at 720am, what time does that roll back to waking up? 20 mins to cool down fully, shower and change, 5 min drive back from gym, 60 min workout, 5 min drive to gym, 5 min to wake and roll out of bed to car. That’s about 1:36 hours which means latest possible wake up is 5:45am wake up.

Is that consistent with your morning timeline? If getting up this early want time do you go to bed?

I do a 30 minute high impact workout at home (I love Caroline Girvan on YouTube for this). 5 minute workout plus 10 minute stretch and cool down. 5-10 minute shower. Can finish getting ready after kids are up. So I only have to get up an hour before they do which is reasonable.

I walk or bike to and from work and do a longer workout both weekend days when DH and I can trade off.

Why are you spending 20 minutes at the gym cooling down? I work out from home so this is easier for me, but I would keep a towel in your car to cover your seat and drive home sweaty! That is 5 minutes of your cool down right there. If I had to drive my kid to school at 7:20, I would also likely be driving to school sweaty, but are you then driving right to work?

For me, working out in the morning works because I work from home and my kids walk or ride the bus to school. Trying to get on a new schedule with the new school year (kids leaving at different times than last year). Over the last three weeks I have tried several things including up at 5 to work out before either kid gets up, not working out until 7:30 when both kids have left, splitting my workout so I am getting up with first, who eats breakfast first thing, then treadmill for 20 minutes while she is getting dressed, then see her off, next one gets up, I go back to working out (more treadmill or weights/resistance depending on day) for another 25 minutes or so while other one is showering, and still have time to see her off and sit with her for breakfast before she leaves for 15 minutes or so.

They are in MS and HS and they don't NEED me in the morning but they appreciate my being there. They will accept DH as an occasional substitute but he generally tries to start his day earlier (hybrid WFH/office) because he coaches several evenings per week and is also the designated homework helper as he is far more patient than I am.

Single mom. When kids were under 5, I’d push a triple stroller for 2 miles. When older than 5, I’d walk on the treadmill while they played math games on their computers (all of us in same room so I could keep an eye out). I’d supplement this by doing a hike (involved a playground) with them once a week. High school age, I’d walk/hike with one or all daily. Sometimes we do Pilates, yoga, etc together at home.

Early morning = start around 6:30-7 and go for an hour. My kids are late elem. so can get themselves ready and don't need active supervision (DH is home).

If I had to do dropoff at 7:20, I'd workout between 7:30-8:30, get ready in 15 minutes, head to work by 9. Can you work out between school dropoff and starting your workday?

First thing almost everyday when I wake up or it doesn’t happen. I’ve been in this routine since I was 21 and I’m now mid-40s w a 9 and 12-yr old. Morning workout is my sanity and as much a part of the routine as brushing teeth and showering. DH knew this when we first started dating and has been supportive at home to ensure this routine continued for me even after we had kids.

Head to work by 9? I wouldn’t get to work until 930/945. Then i wouldn’t leave until 6/630 if working a full day. Getting home at 730 is its own problem and we need both parents for kids afternoon activities.

DP- Does your entire work day have to be at work? Can you leave at a normal time and finish up in the evening? When my kids left at 7:30, I went to the gym by 6 so I could be back in time for them to get up.

I do home workouts and do them later in the evening like 9:30 PM. When I get home I just want to relax for a while and get some stuff done and hang out with the kids. And I can't go in the mornings.
