Someone won a lawsuit in PA and NJ years ago re: free transportation to school. We were bused to our private schools 30 years ago. |
I agree. I also don’t understand why many schools offer morning buses but nothing in the afternoon. |
Yes, same for my mom about 55 years ago in Chatham, NJ and for my nieces currently in Cherry Hill, NJ. |
Huh, fascinating. |
that makes no sense. What principle of law underpins a right to a shuttle bus to a private school that is a luxury and that you don't have to go to at all? Can I sue because the Nationals don't provide me a shuttle bus to get to their games, to which I have season tickets in a suite? Or maybe I'll sue the Kennedy Center, for not picking me up in Chevy Chase to whisk me to my operas during the seaons? |
| GDS is $2/ride in the morning and $6/ride in the afternoon--you just pay for the days you ride. |
| Wow. BISW is $6,400 from Bethesda. I knew it was expensive but didn’t realize that it was so much more than the other schools… |
|
Sorry, screwed up the quotes: It’s the law in Pennsylvania that public school districts are required to bus children in their district to any private school within 10 miles (I think—don’t quote me) from the edge of the district. It’s a huge expense for districts. Our small school district buses to more than 100 schools including lots of expensive prep schools whose families could pay for a shuttle. |
But they only have to bus if the district provides busing to public school students (if they don’t bus anyone, that’s ok). I guess it’s an equality argument. |
Crazy--Round trip Holton from VA (so reverse of you) is around $2400. |
This is still the case in PA. Nephew gets door to door service on a van to and from his house and private school, for free and arranged by the public district. Can you imagine how much easier your life would be if your kids got that?! (I can!) |
Sure, but it is an insane use of taxpayer money… |
| I wish our location had private shuttle services. We pay $300 a month for the regular school bus, which drops off 15 minutes away. |
Well, keep in mind that private school families pay taxes. If I remember correctly, the lawsuit made the argument that transportation and schooling were separate services. Parents of private school students pass on the free schooling, but not the free transportation. And as they were paying for both, they should receive the services they choose. |
