Anyone else wonder if protein powder is just processed junk?

Nope, the middle aged moms of DCUM don't bench nor are they looking for gains bro.

I am a middle aged mom who loves to bench and wants the gains too. I rarely use protein powders though. Egg whites, Greek yoghurt, lean meats and fish all have plenty of protein and it is not that hard to hit protein goals if you include a protein dense food source with every meal.

I learned a long time ago to avoid “soy protein isolate” and I only go for cold processed whey powder

Why not just eat real food for lunch?

It’s not that deep. Yes it’s processed but whey is still food. Having a protein drink to supplement your diet isn’t going to hurt you.
My dietician recommended it, and especially on days when I struggle to meet my protein goals for one reason or another.

To be sure, most food is processed.

Bread, pasta, even milk are all processed. Unless you are drinking the milk straight from the cow. Cheese is processed food, for example— so is yogurt. Even the meat you buy has been processed.

But the question was whether is is processed junk

You don’t have to wonder if protein powder is processed junk. You know it is.

Too much protein in general, especially from meat sources is bad for kidneys. It’s not limited to just protein powder.

I have a smoothie bowl every weekday with a pea and veggie protein powder because I’m mostly vegan. Yes, it’s processed, but it depends on your entire diet. Aside from chips, which I usually hand with guacamole, on the weekends, and a bite of chocolate, that’s pretty much the only processed food I eat M-F.

OP I am like you in that I wish it could be healthy. My kids did chocolate shakes for breakfast for a while and I thought it was great. Then reality dawned on me. Yes it’s ultra processed junk. Eggs, meat, Greek yogurt, beans. You can do it with real foods.

They're the same stupid people who take metamucil, benefiber, and the like because beans and sweet potatoes have too many "carbs."

I eat a lot of beans and fruit and veggies and oatmeal, but my GI recommended Metamucil because of IBS. I wouldn’t lump in fiber like psyllium with protein powder.

This is such a dumb take. It’s like the scene from good will hunting and you managed to find a library. Of course when people are referring to processed food they are referring to junk and it’s a very good way to make a rough filter on what you are intaking

It can be hard to keep food down after intense lifting session.

I wonder why you are so irritated and condescending about this. You don’t have to drink protein powder. If someone else does, it’s in the category of things that don’t affect you.

I wouldn't touch that stuff---or most supplements, for that matter.

As another middle aged mom who reads DCUM and lifts, this is not the slam you think it is.
