Wonder when in your life you got ugly. Was it at birth or by parents? |
I think adding a scoop of plain unflavored whey protein to a homemade smoothie/drink or oatmeal is fine. But a lot of the flavored powders, bars, and ready made protein drinks are filled with garbage ingredients and fake sugars. Stay away from those |
How did your doctor know how much protein you were getting to say it was too much. |
I do great with smoothies for a bunch of reasons. Our Vitamix rocks, and I’m always looking for less processed ways to get the protein I need.
Has anyone tried smoothies with powdered egg whites? I found simple, one ingredient powder and am going to buy some samples. I’d love palatable smoothie recipes to try! (No bananas, please. I know they make smoothies taste great, but my doctor wants me to aboud them for now. Thanks!) |
I don't know a single person in real life who does. |
Whey has a higher "biological value," meaning the proportion of absorbed protein from a food which becomes incorporated into the proteins of the organism's body, than almost any other protein source besides soy beans.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_value#:~:text=Biological%20value%20(BV)%20is%20a,source%20of%20nitrogen%20in%20food. From the link: Common foodstuffs and their values: (Note: this scale uses 100 as 100% of the nitrogen incorporated.) Whey Protein: 96 [11] Whole Soy Bean: 96 [12] Human milk: 95[13] Chicken egg: 94[13] Soybean milk: 91[12] Buckwheat: 90+[14] Cow milk: 90[13] Cheese: 84[15] Quinoa: 83[16] Rice: 83[15] Defatted soy flour: 81[12] Fish: 76[17] Beef: 74[17] Immature bean: 65[12] Full-fat soy flour: 64[12] Soybean curd (tofu): 64[12] Whole wheat: 64[17] White flour: 41[12] Make of that what you will. |
You can use the egg whites that come in a carton for smoothies too. They are pasturized and don’t need to be cooked to consume safely. You can add it right to a smoothie and it doesn’t change the taste. |
I haven't been willing to get near that stuff after an experience when my bag was selected for secondary screening at the airport. The woman ahead of me had a bag of protein powder canisters. The powder set off the explosive detector multiple times, causing a 15 minute later the woman was led away.
I looked pretty alarmed but the TSA agents were totally relaxed and said this happens often. So.. as a chemist I can only assume that this stuff is filled with some pretty nasty organic residue (which is the kind of thing those explosive screening machines are looking for). I would not put that in my mouth. But just me. |
You don’t actually know everything your family, neighbors, and colleagues eat. My guess is you do and no one actually discusses it. |
There is strong group think here at times. Do not upset the hive mind. When I know I’ve been slacking on protein, I will have a scoop of Tera’s Whey (unflavored, unsweetened) in a glass of milk. I’m sure the process of making goat’s milk into dried milk, which is essentially what it is, is industrial and not great, but it has no sweeteners, just sunflower lecithin as an additive (which seems to be non damaging to the body; I wouldn’t trust all the people claiming it’s beneficial). |
Or maybe the TSA has screeners for small airborne particles and the powder set that off. |
I started mixing them together. I use a half scoop of spirutein vanilla and a school of just pea protein powder. The pea protein powder has nothing else in it . When my spirutein runs out I’ll use the unsweetened version . Maybe I’ll add a drip of maple syrup to it |
I'm always shocked how the cheapest easiest option for protein is rarely mentioned: Milk. Of course eggs are cheap, too, but require cooking. Nothing easier and cheaper than drinking a big glass of milk. |
I go to a smoothie shop a couple times a week and I'd say most of the well off and UMC moms in there are ordering smoothies that come with protein. |
When your body can't process the excess protein bad thing happen. Mine was a high-level of uric acid which would lead to gout. There have been studies of high protein and cancer as well but didn't want the thread to deviate to that. |
