I am having a hard time understanding the hate!

Thats a hate of white-hot passion of a thousand suns.

Or a parent whose kid got into the Ivy on academics alone--wasn't recruited since was out with injuries, and then walks on the team and plays for the Ivy. Everyone then is running around saying they only got in due to the sport. Meanwhile, they got into several T10s/20s and the sport was barely mentioned/not coach supported, etc. That drives me insane too. Everyone always wants a reason/justification why their kid didn't get in over another one and they will often make those reasons up without knowing anything about the kid's academic record/scores/outside activities.

And why would you care? Ignore people. And maybe don't mention that they play the sport there or that they got into other T10/T20 because then the problem is really you.

People spend too much time bragging about where their T20/Ivy kid is at school. I notice those parents bring it up far more often that others.

Here's a thought - if you want to brag (school drop/sports drop) - then you open yourself up to the hate.

OP, your post is full of extremes, and it's the extreme language that negates your premise.

I hate the game but not the player.

I’mConvinced it’s one crazy poster with a few random hanger ons. All or most not born in this country and with an imported view of what college “should” look like.

No, I think the athlete advantage, especially for Division III, is decidedly frowned upon by the nativists as well. Since, you know, it’s un-American and all…

No one cares about division 3

DC's friend constantly gets harassed for turning Columbia and Duke down for an LAC.

Harassed? Or are people curious why he made that choice?

Most posters on DCUM suffer from anxiety and insecurity and have come to realize that they are basically failures. Their only hope at redemption is if their kids are successful, and so must attend the "right" school that will lead to success.

Hopefully they have not damaged their kids along the way and as a result sometimes the kid does what is in their own best interest and does not follow the parent's chosen path to success. Since as a group DCUM parents see success being measured by Ivy league or top 10 admission and of course acceptance, there is derision directed at anyone who disagrees with the correct answer. The only exception allowed is for those who live in VA, for which UVA is an acceptable alternative if they don't hit the Ivy league/top 10 jackpot.

I just don't understand the need for some parents to look down on kids that made a choice that best fits them. Is it so unbelievable that a kid turns down an offer fro UVA, Cornell or Brown to attend a school that our kid likes more/better fit? I may be crazy, I get it.

My kid decided to study overseas this summer to get advanced credits. Loving the classes and rigor while navigating a foreign country that is not English speaking.

All this being said, my kid has enjoyed/excelled in his time in college. Most of DCUM would laugh at the fact that my kid attends a huge state flagship.

Please be nice. Its OK to have different opinions!

I laugh at people who are college snobs.

This board is insane about colleges and the misinformation is crazy.

Did you post just to let random people know about your kid studying abroad? Otherwise I’m not sure what the purpose of this post is.

Exactly. Yet that’s over 1/3 the admission spots at Williams, Amherst and its ilk. So why do those schools care?

Many care, especially those who go to college for an education

I am often baffled with the degree of personal hate so many posters have for certain schools. There are definitely schools I like less than others, but I don't really dislike any particular school. I'm not sure why I would. Yet, on DCUM, it literally doesn't matter what particular college is at issue, some posters will invariably express their (oddly personal) distaste for that college or perhaps even a whole category of colleges (LACs, women's colleges, public colleges, etc.). What motivates someone to seek out threads so that they can crap on certain colleges? It often seems . . . pathological.

Agreed. Many also will hate certain cities and geographic regions based on personal biases. It’s an anonymous forum so these posters’ true selves come out

I'm baffled that folks get so troubled by negative speech on an anonymous forum. Who cares?!

Haha, I'm right there with you. Especially if your kid plays football, god forbid.

I see attempts to control discourse (when it is out of your control; I know that’s hard for you) to be, well, pathological.
