DC's friend constantly gets harassed for turning Columbia and Duke down for an LAC. |
| Don't intend ill will, but i really don't care about any of your kids. |
“Harassed?” I doubt that. This just isn’t something people discuss, much less rise to a level of “harassment.” My guess is there’s some weird level of internalization and fantasy at work here if the kid feels “harassed.” |
I’mConvinced it’s one crazy poster with a few random hanger ons. All or most not born in this country and with an imported view of what college “should” look like. |
Huge state flagships are fine. It's where most of the college students attend. |
Sounds stupid |
Only if they are going to UVA! |
No, I think the athlete advantage, especially for Division III, is decidedly frowned upon by the nativists as well. Since, you know, it’s un-American and all… |
Or a parent whose kid got into the Ivy on academics alone--wasn't recruited since was out with injuries, and then walks on the team and plays for the Ivy. Everyone then is running around saying they only got in due to the sport. Meanwhile, they got into several T10s/20s and the sport was barely mentioned/not coach supported, etc. That drives me insane too. Everyone always wants a reason/justification why their kid didn't get in over another one and they will often make those reasons up without knowing anything about the kid's academic record/scores/outside activities. |
"Harassed" might be a bit strong but back in the late 80s when I turned down a UC to go to Cal Poly SLO (when it was a lot less competitive than it is now) I was definitely annoyed by classmates who thought I was stupid to go to a Cal State over any UC and told me multiple times. It was a better fit for me and the right choice. Given how the college game has ratcheted up so much since then I don't doubt some students feel harassed for making the less obvious choice. |

OP: Seems like you are the one who is obsessed with a student's choice of college. Are you trying to quell feelings of guilt ? |
| UVA is a terrific place in a beautiful area. The losers love to hate it. Enjoy! |
Congrats!! And I love that you own they wouldn't get in on grades alone. I have zero hate for athletic recruits - it's part of life. What's annoying is the parents of athletic recruits who feel the need to say they also had stats that would get them in. Ok? - many kids have stats that would get them in - but they don't get in because there are far more qualified kids than spots. The sport got them in. (and I'm ok with that). Hope they love school and the sport is going well. It's a lot of work to be a college athlete on top of being in class. |
This was my thought. I mean, why not just say where they are going. Why do you even need to say where else they were accepted? Seems like you (and kid) are trying to "up their credibility/prestige" somehow? Congrats to your kid and that they are enjoying their flagship and study abroad. |
