USC belongs on that list too. Palm trees don't mean it ain't hood.

I’m sure there are lots of schools that could be added to the list sadly.

Marquette
Johns Hopkins
UChicago

To name a few

Hopkins undergrad is not in a dangerous area of Baltimore.

The dangerous area of Baltimore is called Baltimore.

Crime is actually highly concentrated in Baltimore, and the area around the Homewood campus is pretty safe.

Rhodes would be a hard no for us, and our DS is at school in a rather sketchy town.

I've only visited Trinity from this list and the surrounding hood was absolutely horrendous... but I can certainly imagine Memphis and Philly being worse.

They discuss this specific issue: https://yourcollegeboundkid.com/2024/02/19/interview-170-gil-villanueva-on-understanding-rhodes-college/

Also, I would be sure to check with students at the school who are there currently.

Ridiculous interview. When asked about crime & safety, the Rhodes College administrator switches the conversation to "snow storms". Not kidding.

The area around Rhodes College is very dangerous. Near the Shelby Forest/Frayser section of Memphis which is the 4th most dangerous neighborhood in the entire US.

Rhodes is not near Frayser/Shelby Forest. I live down the street from Rhodes. Honestly, I'm torn on this. Rhodes is a great school. I know a lot of students who attend, and it's a great community. The campus is gated, but the safety is a concern. My son is a rising high school senior, and he's looking outside Memphis for college because he is tired of the crime here. I would just ensure that my kid used common sense in leaving campus, particularly at night.

I would just ensure my kid used common sense - don't live in Memphis, don't go to school in Memphis.

I grew up in Memphis and went to Rhodes. Memphis has always been one of the poorest urban cities, but the recent increase in violent crime is very similar to Chicago and DC.

The last time we were there at a restaurant downtown for dinner, a few hours later there was a shooting right outside the restaurant with multiple victims, and that was in a very, touristy nice area of downtown.

I love Memphis in many ways, loved Rhodes, but I would hesitate to send my child there. If it remains on your list, I would visit and see how both you and your child felt.

I don't know much about the school, but Google Maps reminds me a lot of Fordham - fully gated, zoo and decent area on one side, but a very rough area on the other that can be a huge drawback.

You people need to get out of Potomac and Great Falls.

I've told this story here before, but my overly sheltered kid was horrified by New London when we went for a college visit...until we ran him by Trinity on the way back to the airport. Never heard another word about the former.

The neighborhood around Penn is fine these days, both Penn and Drexel substantially increased their foot prints,

Rhodes College is just a ten minute drive away. Way to close. Folks from that area do not just stay there.

Anyone who writes that one just needs to use common sense when venturing off campus of Rhodes College--whether during the day or at night--is going to great lengths to minimize the daily reality.

Why attend a small school where it is dangerous to venture off campus ? Not worth the risk.

Easiest way to spot someone who knows nothing about Baltimore.

What's wrong with New London? Is it just old and worn, or is it actually hood?

But rest assured by the Rhodes College statement:

Rhodes College is fortified with iron exterior fencing and gatehouses that are manned by trained campus safety officers...the safety officers provide late-night transportation escorting students to different campus locations after dark.

After dark, students need a police escort on-campus to move from one campus building/area to another ???!!!

Doesn't sound too safe to me.
