Rhodes College - hard no b/c of crime?

Anyone have a kid at Rhodes? It checks a lot of boxes for my DC, but the crime rate is pretty alarming.

Crime is rare on campus, which is fully gated with only two entry points, both manned 24/7. My kid and I felt like it gave the place a boarding school feel, which was a big turnoff for my kid. Not to mention, the surrounding neighborhood is a different story when it comes to crime. Not somewhere a single female wants the sun to set on her.

Have you looked at Sewanee? It has a lot of similarities to Rhodes, including the architectural look of its campus, but it's set on something like 10,000 acres instead of being walled into a questionable urban area. My kid loved it but ultimately decided it was a bit too far from city life, so she chose another LAC.

My kid felt the same way about Sewanee--just too remote. But Rhodes does seem like a walled off safe haven in the middle of a super sketchy area.

The area of memphis (midtown) that Rhodes is in does have a lot of crime. I don’t know recent stats but Memphis has a high rate of violent crime as well as carjackings. I hate to say this because Rhodes is a great school and I love the campus and beautiful buildings. But I grew up within walking distance of Rhodes and know many who went there and I’d be hesitant to send my kid there due to the crime in the surrounding area. Just being honest. My parents still live in Memphis and I worry about them a lot.

I think that’s the right order.

I might reverse Rhodes and Temple. North Philly is about as bad as it gets, and Temple isn't gated - though to its credit it has a massive campus police force, and they do more than write parking tickets and break up parties.

I post a lot about this show but only because it’s always so on topic. Anyway, The College Bound Kid just did an interview with the VP of enrollment at Rhodes College.
