That's exactly what Rhodes feels like, especially after dark. There's no walking from campus to local coffee shops, bookstores, bars, etc. Even Sewanee has more stuff like that nearby (and it's actually safe to walk there). Rhodes students can live off campus senior year (used to be junior and senior year) but most don't because it's hard to find safe, student-friendly rentals near campus. Unlike at other schools, there's no "student ghetto" -- just a ghetto. A Rhodes student was murdered in his off-campus rental a couple years ago. Memphis is the pits. |
Well, DCUM in general probably a different opinion, and there are certain neighborhoods I wouldn't walk around in at night, but I never personally felt unsafe. It's more just old and worn and my kid was sheltered, especially from working class New England life. (He ended up there despite that, so I guess he got over it.) |
For a local comparison, Catholic probably slots in right below Temple |
How does he like Conn? I know the gender ratio gives the fellas a huge advantage in the dating market, but does he get a lot of competition from the Coast Guard studz? |
He's not at Conn - he's the "competition". If he makes it through Swab Summer...

| Visiting Rhodes this summer, will report back if I remember to do so. |
Tell him to do it for the girlz. He'll have plenty to choose from down the road at Conn. No offense to anyone's son who goes there, but the dudez aren't exactly known as manly. |
You made me smile, which I haven't done much of since we dropped him off. Thanks. (Sad to say, I AM kind of hoping he eventually picks up a bit of preppiness from Conn being down the road!) |
I ran afoul of obnoxious Penn mom already by talking about sketchy stuff I saw when touring in parent times. |
I'm not sure a Penn mom has any room to talk about sketchy neighborhoods. |
