Would you look for a new team because of this?

When a swimmer is late the coach now needs to repeat the instructions and demonstration and this takes away from the group. One child is eating the resources of the group.

Missing practice for me is not as big of a deal as showing up late.

We are not late to practices.

I posted yesterday - have YOU communicated with the coach, explained your household situation, and collaborated on options?

Not often but I have connected with our coaches a few times this year when DC is going to miss practices, or there was a during-practice issue that we needed to work through.

DP - what "during-practice issue" are you talking about? And what's going on with meets?

Most coaches aren't going to get upset over a few missed practices over the course of the year. They will get upset over practice requirements not being met, being late to or scratching meets at the last minute, and/or "during-practice" issues, depending on what they are.

It depends on the level. Our club has multiple levels and at the lowest level it's ok to miss but do communicate. At the higher levels, it's not ok to miss. We stick with the lower level and decline moving up as ours swim for exercise and fun and not competition and they have multiple interests. But, knowing that, we plan accordingly. Its very hard to do music/orchestra and swim.

That's why I phrased it as "practice requirements not being met" - those vary by training group.

I’m PP. This isn’t relevant to OP other than that it can be important for the adults to communicate. My DC is returning from injury and is struggling to regain performance and mentally is doubting themselves. Coaches and I are talking about strategies both at home and at practice to help DC overcome the mental block and worries about re-injury.

Ohhh I get it! Sorry, PP. My brain is sluggish this morning. All the best to your DC - glad their coaches are being supportive.

Teams have vastly different attendance requirements, behavioral expectations of swimmers, etc. Team culture varies widely.

What kind of behavior issues is the coach bringing up? Do you see them as a problem or no big deal?

If you differ drastically from the team culture then yes, shop around and find a team whose culture you want to be a part of, if for your own happiness than anything else.

OP said the coach’s comments are unrelated to her kids behavior.
