Amazon or Capital One internship?

Either one is good. C1 is a better place to work though.

DP. My nephew is one. Very happy at BoA

Worked at C1 for 4 years. It’s a cult with a messed up performance management system. Stressful, gaslighting, f’d up beyond belief but pays well.

Stay far away from c1, people are telling you this from experience of being in it

When you child goes to other places, amazon will look incredible on the resume. Capital one will not.

Even if your kid is into FinTech, assuming he wants the tech side such as coding, AWS. Amazon will give him a broader foundation.

Where c1 is hiring/poaching amazon/google

Amazon looks great for diversity of skills vs capital one you take solely acros financial institutions

C1 management is horrible, even interns will experience this because they are not excluded from performance ratings.

If Amazon, preferably west coast. Those on the east coast have to stay late due to meetings on pacific time. Nevertheless, bad wlb and culture at amazon. Recently horrible return offer rate to new grad.

High return offer for new grad. C1 has a modern cloud stack and they seem to like slinging all sorts of new tech together. Great jumping point to something else, recruiters seem to value highly. Base is good, bonus comparable, but no RSUs and no free meals.

Since this is final internship, I would pick C1 for the return offer and use that as backup for new grad recruiting. C1 internship also pays similar or better than amzn (60/hr+ housing)

I am actually in the same position. I’m a junior at UMD and accepted an internship offer with C1 a while ago and got an offer with Amazon yesterday. There’s a few things I’m considering. First, C1 gives more return offers than Amazon but Amazon looks better on a CS major’s resume.

Second, the pay for Amazon is quite a bit more than C1 for full time work. I think the difference in the pay for interns is negligible.

Finally (personal to me) , Amazon is close to home for me so I wouldn’t have to get housing. My C1 offer is for Richmond with free housing.

Given all of that information, I have no idea what to choose. If your child made a decision I would appreciate any other insight you can give.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
DS is leaning towards C1 as the chances of getting a return offer with C1 is greater then Amazon, if he rejects C1 at this point and does not get a return offer from Amazon after graduation he may not have employment at a reputable company.
Return offers with C1 are almost guaranteed.

It’s not what everyone thinks it is. Most Stay 2-3 years and get PIPed.

This is absolutely not true- “most” people do not get performance managed. I work at Amazon and absolutely love it, fwiw. I’m based at HQ2. I’m in AWS which seems like a friendlier culture than the retail side, but it has been my favorite job to date, and I’ve been fortunate enough to work at some pretty amazing places. Like everywhere, it depends on the team/ people you work with. My days are busy but I’ve had incredible opportunities and my overall lifestyle is quite sustainable if not enviable compared to my peers elsewhere.

Just throwing out an alternative viewpoint! Congrats on the great choices!

Anonymous wrote:For juniors I would pick Cap 1. Amazon (according to a few friends w kids at Amazon) didn't give return offers last summer. Instead gave return internship offers and delayed the full time offers. I would prefer to have a full time offer in hand by the end of junior summer. But if your student doesn’t care either way, then I would go w Amazon.

My husband works for Amazon and he just said that his interns last year got job offers. Unless he’s just losing time and it was the year before. I’d say for comp sci, I’d choose Amazon.

This is key.

Also, I don’t think the internships are particularly grueling. He said they have to give them a project they can finish but not one that if something goes wrong it really matters. I think Amazon just looks better on the resume than capital one, even if they don’t end up taking a job there or do and leave after two years.

Yes. Only an idiot would consider a credit card company. Amazon is not great but C1 is horrible.

How long have you been at AWS? It's very manager specific but no matter how hard and long you work you WILL be on a PIP soon enough.

They provide very little training.

This. I would pick Capital One.

That said, eyes fully open, both have Division 1 office politics for the full-time employees. So either way, DC needs to learn to be cautious in what they say to colleagues. An internship maybe is a good opportunity to learn this.
