Amazon or Capital One internship?

Please have him go with Cap One. Then maybe he can fix bill pay feature on the app.

Does one pay more than the other? Is your kid just writing code for Capital One's basic CC business, or is your kid part of some specialized group doing interesting CS work?

Does your kid want to work in FinTech after graduation? What part of Amazon is hiring him and again is it just writing code for the core Amazon shopping business or is he part of a specialized group?

I don't know if the decision is so black and white until we know more.

I do agree in general that having Amazon on your resume probably travels further...but if your kid really wants FinTech, I would think Capital One is a good name too.

Except with its acquisition of Discover, it will be the largest credit card company in the US. It's a tech company disguised as a bank.

Worked at Capital One for 14 years.

If your child wants a relaxed environment but not too techy then Capital One. You can make a long career here. Good pay, not a big workload.

If child is ambitious and wants to grow up the ranks either in tech or on business side, having put in the effort at Amazon would help a lot. But think of it as a stepping stone. Amazon carries more weight in any area outside of DC. Going to learn a lot more here.

Either is great. I'd give Amazon the advantage for a CS major though.
The decision is important because few tech firms are offering jobs to any new grads who didn't intern with them. If he ultimately wants to work in big tech, an internship and then full-time offer is the best way to do it by far right now.

I will pick Amazon

although C1 is a lower tier bank, they do have a great internship and training program - take that route

Cap1. Amazon is a beast.

Amazon has a better name. My DS (CS major) was choosing between the same and chose Amazon.

You don't know what you are talking about
Cap one fires 20% every year.
Cap One is a mess right now.

If you have a crap manager you don't get a bonus.
If you come in at the wrong time of the year you don't get your bonus.
Richmond mafia at Cap One is strong nothing gets done on the tech side it's awful.
And their hiring mechanism is ridiculous

Yes but amazingly, Amazon culture is worse. Most people leave after 4 years due to the comp structure. Read any Amazon Reddit forum for the weighting.

Agree Cap1 is very cut throat. They manage out or put on performance plans about 15% every year. They are a bit of a mess right now. For CS, go with Amazon

Cap 1, everyone I know recommends it. Everyone I know who has been with Amazon has a negative opinion or had a mixed experience.

Anonymous wrote:For juniors I would pick Cap 1. Amazon (according to a few friends w kids at Amazon) didn't give return offers last summer. Instead gave return internship offers and delayed the full time offers. I would prefer to have a full time offer in hand by the end of junior summer. But if your student doesn’t care either way, then I would go w Amazon.

I heard the same. Several to CS at UMD interned at amazon and did not get offers. The few kids I know who worked at Capital One did get offers and they were high paying jobs.
