Emory ED is out!

Assuming that this is true, why was Emory University your first choice school ?

Were you chasing a scholarship ? (If so, I think that the major scholarships at Emory typically are awarded to those with higher GPAs).

Was Emory a true first choice school or was it a strategic play that you thought would be a sure ED admit ?

Affirmative action doesn't exist anymore. Nice try, troll.

This is not true. A student may freely write about URM experiences in an essay. That can be considered in admissions. In fact, some schools send pamphlets out that specifically mention this.

No other poster mentioned what their essay was about, their background, their ECs, how easy/hard the high school - nothing. So yes, it’s a troll.

NP here, who cares if a “strategic play”? ED is binding, which makes it an applicant’s “true first choice” bc they signed a contract to attend. Who are any of us, including Emory, to question the reasoning. I hate this system where we parse out why a kid chooses an ED school and question whether valid enough. Gimme a break. The kid agreed to apply pretty much no where else. Isn’t that enough??

It is a troll because no parent is going to use DCUM to celebrate their child and immediately tag on something to suggest their child might not deserve it.

I am genuinely curious as to why this poster made Emory his/her first choice school ?

Why does my question bother you so much ? Get help.

Also, who the heck hears good news like that and writes "Interesting. What was their essay about?"

Emory doesn't even give scholarships for ED. DC is the only site where some dont think Emory is a top school, just to be "surprised" at how selective it is EVERY year.

Not true, people were going to ask about the GPA anyway so I gave further insight. Emory doesn't count freshman year grades so that's why we applied, without it he has a higher GPA.

You seem out of touch - universities still care about diversity and Emory certainly does. Last year all the ED admits from our highly regarded DMV private were URM. Students can find ways in their essays to communicate how they can contribute to the community via diversity. University of California dropped race/ethnicity from applications many cycles ago - yet these schools explicitly state that they value diversity and are looking to craft a diverse student body. It's all in the essays.

Why are you assuming that identifying as URM means they didn't deserve it? You do know that kids with those stats will succeed at Emory right? Emory (and other universities) are not looking to just fill with students who have the highest GPA and test score combo. They are looking to create a community "among students who can succeed" - other factors beyond GPA/test scores come into play: like diversity, ECs.

Okay, I'm not the parent of this rejected DC, but have a close friend with a DC in first year @ Emory with higher GPA and SAT as well as URM. Why did this DC choose Emory? Kid struggled emotionally/mentally in first year of HS - COVID closure probably a blessing for them. A hybrid sophomore year also helpful. Struggles were more in the rear view mirror by start of junior year when in HS full time. College office encouraged the DC to apply to an Ivy and the family toured a few. Also looked at some Midwestern and Southern schools - LACs and universities. When it came time to make a decision for ED, the DC opted for Emory - basically liked the vibes and research opportunities and decided it would be best to not be in a real pressure cooker in case prior struggles resurfaced. DC didn't chase prestige, but what school would be a good fit based on holistic reasons, not just academic/status.

I imagine essays from Thomas Sowell, Condoleezza Rice, Winsome Sears, or Alan Keys would stand out as compelling?
