Non-Jew here. I have believed that all my life. Not anymore, though. Not after seeing the protests and horrendous things said about Jews.
It is frightening. Especially on college campuses.

Same. Cornell alum and horrified about what’s happening on campus now.

That, the Russian airport thing, this tweet. It’s all horrifying and shaking what I thought was true.

I’m not Jewish OP but reading this thread I’m reminded that many Americans are very arrogant re: what *could* happen here. The US is not immune to things that have or are happening elsewhere in the world. Please don’t take it for granted.

Well it all starts with "othering" them through propaganda etc and for years now it has been very fashionable on elite US college campuses to be intensely against Israel.

I don’t give a shit about Israel but I will do whatever is necessary to defend American Jews.

It’s just when there are flare ups in Israel that the campus tensions rises. Most of the time it’s fine. Same with any other conflict/current news.

Have you all seen what is happening to Jewish students at Cornell tonight?
If you would’ve told me 4 years ago that evangelical Trump voters would be the biggest ally of our community in 2023 I would’ve called you insane (among other things). And yet here we are.
They are most definitely not our allies. Christian nationalists are only invested in Jews as fodder for their apocalypse fantasies.
That’s not what I’m seeing.
It's all superficial. Do some reading on why.

Without Israel, American Jews are less safe.

You can dislike Israel’s current government. I do too. But having a Jewish state is essential for our safety because it ideally is a haven.

I’d argue that having countries with strong protections for religious/ethnic minority rights is what is actually essential.

After 2,000 years of genocides, Jews aren’t convinced.

A Jewish baby was found baked to death in an oven. Is that what you mean by “flare ups in Israel”?

I realize you believe that, but I would invite you to understand that when you say / supporting Israel is supporting American Jews, you may actually be undermining your support.

Instead say, this treatment of American Jews is unacceptable.

As a Christian Republican, I don’t have apocalyptic fantasies. I’m just a sensible person who understands right and wrong. But hey if you don’t want my allyship and look down on me as some kind of crazy person, have fun trying to get the social justice warriors back on your side!!

Some Jews are. The US experience should convince you.

Why do people feel so empowered to tell Jews what we should feel?

No, I don’t feel safe in the US right now.
