Yes, but that’s to graduate from the college. Not admission. UVA May not require calculus to graduate in religion. But good luck getting in from the DMV without taking it in HS. |
It really says something about how out of whack everything is when you need more advanced course work to get into college than to get out. |
My kid completed algebra 1 in his public middle school. He got an A. He took a placement test for his private HS and didn't come close to passing so he had to retake algebra 1. He wasn't the only one of his MS classmates. Public school grades need to be taken with a grain of salt. |
And, mine is in precal in 9th. Who cares? Not all people are good at math. Op child will be fine and get into a good school for them. I would not have wanted to take precal or cal and never needed it. |
Yawn. Just because your kid did not do well does not mean others did not or older is better. |
| Do you need Calc to major in Marketing? I would think Stats would be more useful? |
I’m guessing you did take the subject covered in today’s precalc class, it just had a different name. I took algebra in 9th grade, which was typical, and it included many topics that my kids didn’t see until precalc. If people want to rehash the need for calc, proceed, but the course OP wants to avoid is material most our grandparents had access to in HS. |
There is a very basic "calc with applications" class that marketers usually take. Basic stats is also required. |
NP. I have to disagree with you. I find today’s math curriculum more challenging than what I had in high school in NJ. I did on-level also, but my kid is getting a fantastic math education that is extremely rigorous. There are also so many resources for students now. Khan, YouTube, free tutoring, math honors society. I think the country’s math education has improved while history and literature classes have gotten worse in quality. |
One more time for the folks in the back. Not everyone needs to take precalc for college. Modern schools push more stats into the algebra curriculum, and push some topics back to precalc. This is because the basic applied content is more important for everyone than the advanced abstract stuff like trigonometry. |
|
My cousin is in a reputable 4 year state college right now. Didn't get through precalculus. Stumbled through a "liberal arts mathematics" class freshman year en route to an English/Drama degree.
Not everyone in college goes on to work for the likes of Northrop Grummon or Amazon or a medical doctorate or Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe LLP |
All of my kids took stats instead of precalc/trig. All were humanities majors and none had any trouble with competitive college admissions. |
DP. There are plenty of schools within the top 100 who would accept an otherwise good student who had taken challenging courses and done well. Pre-calc isn't some kind of dealbreaker unless shooting for a STEM major. |
+1 There is no reason to take Calculus unless you are aiming for a STEM major or you just really love math. There are plenty of advanced humanities courses that very smart kids can take instead of Calculus. |
Not everyone needs it. precal and calculus is for heavyweight majors like business, stem, etc |
