Pre-calc/Trig

How important for college admissions? Can you take stats instead?

Depends on the college. Competitive colleges want to see Calculus. Skipping even preCalc would not cut it.

You can do anything you want to. But if you don’t even take pre-Calc, don’t waste your time applying T50 or even lower. Algebra II plus stats— no trig, pre-Calc, Calc is a community college pathway.

Pre-calc is a typical sophomore/junior class, so I don’t think skipping it would be great for admissions.

NP. I don’t believe this. Obviously kid won’t get into top 150, but there are a zillion college that would take a student who hasn’t taken pre calculus.

Going up to Algebra 2 and Statistics is just fine. However, it also depends on the major.

My college freshman is retaking pre-calc now with lots of others kids who either didn’t take it or didn’t do well enough on the college placement test. It depends on what you kid wants to major in. Stats is more useful in life but pre-calc is necessary for calculus so it depends.

You are repeating the same thing the PP said but saying you disagree.

I cannot think of a major that would require calculus but not statistics, and also have students who failed a precalculus test. The only people who avoid stats but take calc are math/CS majors. Other sciences require stats, and non sciences don't require calculus.

Most highly selective colleges require a stats class in college in certain majors. It would be better to take higher math in hs and then stats in college.
As for OPs question, yes of course you can find a college with that pathway, but you are choosing to take a lot of possibilities off of the list. It’s a very personal decision and no one here knows the profile of your kid beyond what you have shared

Yeah this is off the mark, say that about calculus if you want, but pre-calc is just a solid HS education. My worry wouldn't be that this is used for college gatekeeping, but that it reflects an actual deficiency that will be hard to overcome later. Needless to say no one uses math they didn't learn, but there are topics in pre-calc that can be very useful, including for understanding statistics.

So I was! Sorry, I clearly was not paying close attention.

I can only tell you what DC is doing, which is to take the pre-calc/trig route.

The poster who said Algebra II/Stats is a path to community college is a bonehead, do not listen to them. There are plenty of schools one can get into apart from CC.

If kid takes pre-calc as a senior can they get into a 50-100 school?
