If anything you should compare your child’s own SOL vertical scaled score from the previous year to the current beginnning of year VGA. Same content. |
DOE website updated with a "guide" to interpret Fall 2023 results. They did away with the quadrant percentiles....so, still not entirely helpful. |
Can you link it? I just read the page and don't see anything helpful. |
I'm not sure if this is what PP was referring to, but there are parent guides on this page https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/student-assessment/parent-caregiver-resources-for-growth-assessments Does anyone else have a 3rd grader? Does the cut of for receiving tutoring (1477 and below for math, 1550 and below for reading) seem kind of high considering they were taking a test with 3rd grade information that they haven't learned yet? https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/50417 |
Here's the page that I was talking about : https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/student-assessment/parent-caregiver-resources-for-growth-assessments
Here's the language: links to each year/grade. Understanding Vertical Scaled Scores A score called a Vertical Scaled Score is one piece of information in the Student Detail by Question (SDBQ) Reports for Growth Assessments. SDBQ Reports for Standards of Learning reading and mathematics tests in grades 3-8 and Algebra I also include a Vertical Scaled Score. Resources for Vertical Scaled Scores from the Fall 2023 Growth Assessments in reading and mathematics have been developed for parents. I have a 3rd grader and this does seem weird. Teacher told us that the kid was in the 92nd percentile for math, but the cut off for tutoring is only 1 point below her score. How can that be right? |
Looked like different content to me. |
Are you sure the 92 percentile was on the growth assessment and not on the new test that's replacing Math Inventory? |
So, looking at 6th grade...last year a score of 1507 was in the top quartile, but this year 1602 and below are in need of support? Things change that much from year to year? |
Anyone else getting odd results with these charts? My fourth grader has always scored very high on standardized tests, and this year scored in the top few percentile on DIBELS and Map Growth. But both SOL scaled scores put him in the middle "at risk" category. |
If those are the scores, then my gifted in math 3rd grader needs math tutoring. Doesn’t need it in reading. Scored in the top 99th percentile for quantitative on the cogat. Seems a bit absurd to me. |
different questions last year the scores seem high based on my experience with my kid - this year is more representative of their abilities |
So if i have a 6th grader taking pre algebra I can probably ignore this right? Since they took the 8th grade test and it tested them on stuff they haven't learned yet? I assume they aren't really going to be getting tutoring?
Also - this test says my 3rd grader will get tutoring in both math and english. I am not surprised with the English but he was testing ahead in math last summer. I know for 3rd grade it tests them on end of the yr 3rd grade content so I imagine it is not that surprising that they don't know stuff they haven't learned yet. |
I will add my 6th grader was told not to pay attention to the scores or rather that they expected them to be lower given its testing them ahead of what they learned. I am actually surprised he scored as well as he did but not good enough to be in the well prepared category. Also the middle category is kind of odd becuase it says "at risk of needing additional support" so now that they necessarily need additional support but that they are at risk of needing it? |
Yeah, I have a 3rd grader with advanced academic placement and >99% on other recent tests. His VGA scores based on this parent guide say he’s at high risk and needs tutoring (middle category). Seems odd! |
