UMich hits new enrollment record; opens doors to nearly 34,000 undergraduates

UVA boosters like to pretend they are from the Northeast. They think part of that charade is sneering at anything Midwestern. It bursts their self-delusion when they can’t intellectually keep pace with something from the Rustbelt or Farmbelt.

Umich has lot of opportunities for undergrad (research, project team, etc). You just have to find it. It is what you make of it.

It is a sound strategy backed by math equations - as privates keep enrollment levels flat in most cases and apps increase, it is the publics who are benefiting most. Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Arizona State - whatever you think of them they are playing a good game.

Yeah, it seems like a short-term money grab.

There are plenty of joke majors at Michigan, including “General Studies,” where you can just take the easiest courses across all departments and get a bachelor’s.

I know smart outgoing kids who transferred out of UVA for the same reasons. I can’t imagine how awful it is on a campus that’s 2x-3x larger. These gigantic R1s are fine for grad school, but not ideal for 17-19 year old kids.

Not exactly something new. For many decades all sorts of colleges have offered “general studies” & “liberal arts” degrees. Often they have a theme but don’t mert all requirements for an actual major.

Yawn. Fairly unimpressive in-state acceptance rate.

Who are all these UVA boosters that show up on every thread? UVA is a fine school but not on par with the likes of Michigan, Wisconsin or Texas. LOL

Like clockwork, the UVA boosters are threatened any time another school is praised. I can't imagine what it must be like to be so insecure.

Yikes! Did they miscalculate their yield?

Is there a rate that IS impressive? With 34k undergrads, I don't think that's their priority.

Last year UVA received a record-breaking 57,000 applications for only about 4,500 Seatrs. Four-fifths of the applicants were OOS or international

And their average acceptance rate for the past 5 years is earth shattering 35%

It was like 16% last year OOS
