Confusion about Oakton pyramid feeder patterns

Anonymous
OP here. This thread has taken a humorous turn. I appreciate all info although indeed was particularly interested in where the OES kids go for middle school. re: Crossfield, don't the kids who go to Carson then go on to Chantilly? I know there are nice areas of Oakton but they aren't as familiar to me as other areas, so I don't know if OES or Crossfield or others are a good bet. I've heard people say Oakton lacks community but have heard others say that's not true, depends on where you live. Happy to hear more about these two particular elementary zones.

Oakton indeed has a great sense of community depending on where you live. The Miller Heights/Windsong neighborhood is really active and organizes lots of neighborhood events.

This part of Oakton is zoned for Waples Mill WS, which wasn’t one of the schools OP noted as of particular interest. Waples Mill ES feeds into Franklin MS and then Oakton HS. BUT if your kid is eligible for Level IV AAP services, then they’ll transfer to Hunters Woods ES because Waples Mill still doesn’t have Local Level IV. From there, Level IV eligible kids can either go to Franklin MS for Local Level IV or go to Carson MS, which is the AAP Center.

I live near Oakton ES but due to the vagaries of zoning, my kids do not attend. I've been there for community events. It seems nice inside (nicer than my kids' school) and has a nice playground. It is on a busy road and I'm told they do not encourage walkers for this reason.

I think it has LLIV now, but if you are intersted in an AAP center, the assigned one is way up in Reston.

OP here. I was a bit less interested in Waples Mills because of test scores but would still consider if has strong Local Level IV. I noticed the center school looked far flung. Happy to hear more about this school.

Waples mill is a really good school too, wouldn’t read much of anything into the test scores. Waples has a really strong community. Level IV is in fact at Hunters Woods which can be a hike but plenty of eligible kids stay at Waples and just get special services and that works okay.

No. I think some Crossfield goes to South Lakes--but the Franklin Farm kids (and others?) go to Oakton. Definitely not Chantilly. Only some AAP kids at Carson go to Chantilly if that is their base school. The base schools at Carson feed into Westfield, Oakton, and South Lakes. (I think that is correct.)

OP --if you want to see each school's boundaries, go to "schools" at the fcps.edu site. Click on the school and a tab will pop up which has a link to the boundary map at the top. FWIW, it is not the clearest map unless you really zoom in, but it will show you what you need to know, I think.

Ah, right, this is one of the few that doesn't have local LIV. Thanks for this input!

Thanks! I will check this out. I also know the home prices vary dramatically in the OHS pyramid and within some of these elementary zones. We're looking for something under a million and while we don't see a lot of that now with the current interest rates I'm hoping more inventory will open up down the road.

Thanks for clearing it up, OP. I’m the PP who correctly stated this while another poster argued with me.

Ok, now I am really confused. Also are you talking about Oakton ES or Oakton High?

Oakton High. You can look at Franklin boundary and see--I think Navy and Waples Mill--but Waples Mill may be split.

The thread is about where OES (Oakton Elem School) students go for middle school though. They go either to Thoreau or Luther Jackson.

OP:
I'm considering buying a house in the Oakton HS pyramid but the feeder patterns are confusing and making me wary. I'm particularly interested in Crossfield ES and Oakton ES (but am also open to other suggestions). I'm wondering about people's experiences sending their kids to Oakton ES and then Jackson Middle? All OES kids zoned to OHS go to Jackson, right? And if DC gets into AAP what middle school would that be?

OP asked about Crossfield, as well--which is Carson and said she was "open" to other options. Franklin has sent kids to Oakton for many, many years.

Someone chimed in and said Oakton kids go to Franklin or Carson. They were talking about Oakton High School kids, which are not Oakton Elementary School kids.

Go read the first post in this thread. Crossfield was mentioned and OP was talking about Oakton High School pyramid. Crossfield goes to Oakton High (most of Crossfield) and a good number of Oakton High students go to Franklin. I did not "chime in." I answered a question.

OP clarified later. I was correct.

NP but I think there is a teeny tiny portion of Crossfield within Franklin Farm that goes to Franklin - Chantilly and one neighborhood that is technically in Reston goes to Hughes-South Lakes but the vast majority of the population goes to Carson - Oakton. Some of the houses zoned to Crossfield have Oakton addresses but most do not.

I think all of the Crossfield kids from Franklin Farm go to Carson and then Oakton. Some of Franklin Farm goes to Navy (I think) and then to Franklin and Oakton. The part of Franklin Farm across the parkway goes to Oak Hll, Franklin, and Chantilly.

OES has had LLIV for over a decade (my current college junior was in second grade when it was instituted). The center is Sunrise Valley ES. In Reston, but not necessarily “way up” depending on where OP might end up in the OES/TMS/OHS zone. FWIW, I’m in an area zoned for OES and JMHS, and SVES is actually closer to my house than OES. The edge of the OHS boundary is five minutes up the road so not much farther away. Although I kept my kid at OES and had few complaints with LLIV (and the one teacher who was the source of 99% of my issues is long gone).

This thread has been informative but does confirm that OHS feeder patterns are....complicated.

Nope, there's literally one half of one street where kids go to Crossfield - Franklin - Chantilly. It's like a handful of houses and it's really stupid.
