Fort Totten Metro: Kid jumped out of a car with a gun this afternoon to take my phone

Anonymous
Why on earth would you fight for your phone or even wallet? A phone is nothing - you brick it and replace it from the cloud backup. The wallet is annoying, but it just takes an hour on the phone to replace everything. None of it is worth risking your life.

The weird part of this story is why anyone would bother stealing a phone in the first place. One, it’s locked! Two, it will shortly be deactivated.

So you would just give up all your property because a random teenager told you to?

There was no crime here. Nothing was taken. No report was made. Everyone is perfectly safe.

Attempted robbery. Still reportable.

OP, please take care.

Sadly, a busy afternoon.

I think the report should be with WMATA police. Contact info on their website. Always good to have their text number in a phone in case you need/want to discretely report a crime in progress on a train or bus.

The fact that there were trying to take your phone shows they are not pros

You should get a watch or other device with Find My feature so you can let them have it and then track them.

An amateur seems even more likely to be trigger happy. A pro would know the risks. Good thing this hemorrhoid didn’t have the balls.

And then what?

Just like rape. Why would you fight? Just lie back and relax. It'll be over soon.

Look, I get where you're coming from, and you're not wrong on the individual encounter level. My concern is you scale that up and there are no social repercussions for street robberies. If that's the case, it's just going to get worse.

Exactly. I wish more people were like OP. If city officials won't fight for us, then we have to fight for ourselves. The more these delinquents are blocked, the more of them will stop trying. Unfortunately, I don't have the guts OP does. And I tell my kids the same thing PP and most posters do, the phone and wallet aren't worth it. But for my daughter, the moment one hand is laid on you and there is even a chance they are trying to take you with them, you kick, scream, fight. There is absolutely no other option. Getting shot is better than getting taken.

Wow, you're just going to roll over? At some point the people have to stand up. This is how things improve.

That sounds terrifying. I'm glad you weren't hurt, and I'm sorry you can't safely walk around your neighborhood.

Not OP, but if someone tried to take my phone and they had a gun, i would not "stand up" -- I wouldn't be armed, and like the PP said, the phone is locked and replaceable. Not really worth it to me to get shot just in the name of "not rolling over."

What crime? Nothing was stolen. Duh.

So a white SAHM who probably moved here from Ohio or someplace got frightened when she saw a local child. She thinks her being scared of young Black men means a law was somehow broken

The sooner gentrifiers like this move the hell back out of DC, the better.
