Look, I get where you're coming from, and you're not wrong on the individual encounter level. My concern is you scale that up and there are no social repercussions for street robberies. If that's the case, it's just going to get worse.

The weird part of this story is why anyone would bother stealing a phone in the first place. One, it’s locked! Two, it will shortly be deactivated.

Wow, you're just going to roll over? At some point the people have to stand up. This is how things improve.

Not OP, but if someone tried to take my phone and they had a gun, i would not "stand up" -- I wouldn't be armed, and like the PP said, the phone is locked and replaceable. Not really worth it to me to get shot just in the name of "not rolling over."

I always carry a dummy phone to hand muggers.

People have a natural fight, fright, freeze (and now fawn). In the moment, there isn't a lot of cognitive processing, it is more innate reaction.

I am a fighter when faced with those types of threat. It isn't a conscious choice. I would probably happily give my phone once my brain kicks in and tells me I am being stupid to fight to keep it but my instinct is to fight.

Fight: defend
Flight: leave
Freeze: do nothing
Fawn: do what you are asked
