Someone is trying to manifest BCC into Woodward, they've been doing it for years, and I honestly don't have any idea why. |
Any competent BOE will adjust boundary of all adjacent HS's to Woodward. It will mainly help with overcrowding in DCC and WJ, but it's be will criminal if BOE does not use this time line to adjust boundaries of many others at the same time. 3 HS together will have lots of seats. All boundaries should be adjusted to make the best possible decision without having to bus kids long distance. |
|
All future boundaries will take account of adjacent schools. There was a resolution for this. It make sense. Some schools have empty seats and some are over crowded.
Based on projections, it's best to distribute kids based on capacity to avoid having such lopsided distributions. BCC, WJ, DCC, Churchill, Wootton, Whitman all should be adjusted. No need to bus anyone long distance, but adjust boundaries as needed. |
| Will they at least keep the kids who are already there when they start changing boundaries? My child will be a junior at WJ in 2026. I can only hope the county won't force him to transfer to Woodward for the most important year of high school.. |
you are one of those people that likes to find things to worry about....no they will not. |
ALL adjacent high schools? I went through a boundary study that only had 3 high schools. If you think MCPS has the capacity to do a boundary study with that many high schools, I don't know what to say. Not to mention, imagine that many high schools' worth of affluent, outraged parents and property owners. |
Given its proximity and the fact that most families prioritize neighborhood schools it seems like a slam dunk. |
I don't see how they couldn't since it's been over 40 years and doing this could save a lot that is currently wasted on unnecessary busing. |
You do realize that an earlier CIP included Woodward to relieve overcrowding at BCC? And that parents went nuts and it was taken out of the next CIP? And, that any future board can change what any prior board decided? Meaning, they can decide to put BCC back into Woodward, or any other high school, at any time |
In other changes, MCPS has moved juniors. I had heard they wouldn't move seniors (which they have also done in the past). On the original timeline, I would have had a senior, now that its pushed back, my kid (9th currently) should graduate from WJ. But, anything is on the table. There may be a phase in, they may give a choice, your neighborhood may not be affected... It has been pretty regularly speculated throughout this process that Farmland ES, Luxmanor ES and Garrett Park ES (Tilden MS feeders) will go to Woodward, but maybe they will straighten out some weird stuff with NBMS. Like that the townhomes on Tuckerman go to NBMS (KPES I assume) rather than Tilden which was walking distance. |
No, it was not included in an earlier CIP. It was discussed at some initial roundtable meetings but never made it into an actual plan. |
The last time they reassigned high schoolers, they allowed juniors and seniors to stay at their current schools. |

Funny to think that WJ is now too overcrowded and will be sending kids back to CW, which was absorbed due to low enrollment into WJ in 1987, when it was rebuilt/expanded. It's fun to see both mascots at sporting events: Mighty Moo and the Wildcat.
"Walter Johnson l first opened to grades 10-12 in 1956, and was named after the local baseball pitcher and politician. The school's original mascot was the Spartan; it became the Mighty Moo in 1963, named after the cows that roamed the fields before the school was built. After a 1987 consolidation with nearby Charles W. Woodward High School, Walter Johnson maintained its school colors of white and green, but adopted Woodward's mascot, "Wild Thing" the Wildcat." |
From the plans shown during the community meeting, it just looked like they were going to have to move Northwood into the building before they could finish the athletic fields and the like. There was no mention of performing arts, but that would be great if there were one. Hopefully they will have an APEX program like WJ's, considering WJ students may be reassigned after beginning the program. |
BCC is nowhere near Woodward—it's 5.8 miles away. I can't imagine they'd bus kids that far, especially with morning commuter traffic. |
