New "W" High School

Anonymous
We are new to the area and zoned for WJ. Does anyone know what boundary changes may happen with the opening of the new Charles Woodward? I know it will be a holding school for two years but then I heard there may be a rezoning of WJ and Einstein and the students will go to that school?

When does it open (technically reopen)?

It's Woodward high School. I think it opens in 2026 so guessing anyone who lives closer to what word than their current high school will end up there

Woodward is scheduled to reopen as a high school in August 2026. Probably in 2024/25, MCPS will undertake a boundary study to determine which neighborhoods will be reassigned to Woodward. It is reopening to relieve overcrowding at WJ and the DCC schools (Wheaton, Einstein, Northwood, Kennedy, and Blair).

Most of those schools are very far away from Woodward, especially Blair and Northwood. Would they really bus kids that far?

I wouldn't think they would as it makes no sense. It will also probably pull from WJ. They'd have to change all the boundaries.

ugh imagine the fight over which parts of the county will no longer be in the DCC and go to Woodward instead

WJ, Wheaton and Einstein are the closest to Woodward, so odds are they will be directly affected.

They are going to make Woodward part of the DCC. Most of the kids will be pulled from the area surrounding the school, the remaining seats will be lottery and or some sort of criteria program.

I don’t think this is true.

+1. Not true.

They will change a few neighborhoods on the very edges of DCC, at most. They will draw from the bulk of DCC only through the magnet program, which will do just a little to help DCC overcrowding and likely take from among the more motivated DCC students. Ws need not be concerned -- their needs will be met, and they won't have to worry about socioeconomic mixing.

Now the boundary analysis, on the other hand...nah -- that has enough over-focused political interest to burn itself up and get buried. No real solutions for those most in need.

100% not true - Woodward will not become part of the DCC

There may be county-wide redistricting, as there will be 3 new high schools opening, Woodward, Crown, and Northwood

What magnet program?

I think this will happen too and I don't think they should add any community input. Just redistrict to to allow for walkers at the schools, stop busing all over, and figure out the rest of the neighborhoods that are close to 2 or 3 schools. The years it takes and the blow up it causes is insane and such a waste of time.
