That is shocking indeed.

Villanova has a Presidential Scholarship that provides a full scholarship. I am not sure how many are awarded each year, but it does require a separate application and a nomination from a guidance counselor. The deadline for this year has passed, I believe.

Ugh but it’s Alabama…

What does that mean?

all are doing great and none have student debt.

Alabama is also generous with accepting APs as credit, so students can start with a bunch of credits and in higher level classes. The scholarship last 4 years so kids use the extra time after completing their requirements to do research anywhere they want (overseas, other universities) and Alabama pays for it. Or some will use the scholarship to get a Masters. Pretty good deal.

It reveals more about the poster than the poster's target.

W&L is something like top 10% of incoming class, so it is clearly one of the most extensive and generous programs.

Yes, approximately 40-42 Johnson Scholars named per year at W&L. It's 10% of the incoming class.

My DC was an alternate. They offer above the desired 40-42 to account for yield. The kids my DCs year that she got to know during the Johnson Weekend who were offered a Johnson, but did not accept went to Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, & Brown. Super impressive kids from around the world! They ended up offering my DC a 90% full ride as alternate with the option to wait until the end of May for a possible bump. She took a very generous offer at another school instead.

It's actually 7% of a class at most (as cited by W&L).

You are wrong. It is approximately 10%. Can be higher if they predict yield incorrectly.
The appx. 10% is right on their website, in several places. They also say around 44 scholars.
