W&L is something like top 10% of incoming class, so it is clearly one of the most extensive and generous programs. Yes, approximately 40-42 Johnson Scholars named per year at W&L. It's 10% of the incoming class. My DC was an alternate. They offer above the desired 40-42 to account for yield. The kids my DCs year that she got to know during the Johnson Weekend who were offered a Johnson, but did not accept went to Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, & Brown. Super impressive kids from around the world! They ended up offering my DC a 90% full ride as alternate with the option to wait until the end of May for a possible bump. She took a very generous offer at another school instead.
It's actually 7% of a class at most (as cited by W&L).
You are wrong. It is approximately 10%. Can be higher if they predict yield incorrectly. The appx. 10% is right on their website, in several places. They also say around 44 scholars.
