And your post is a valuable contribution to this thread. Well done! Blair is 50% larger than our neighborhood high school. It’s good to hear that it’s well run and that kids seem to like it and have good experiences. The long lunch hour seems like a good idea, and making that meeting time for clubs was a great idea. |
True, Blair's average SAT for the largest demographic to Blair and any W is higher at Blair, and although the haters will say its the magnet, there are few magnet kids in this demographic. It's clear that Blair simply provides an outstanding education for anyone who wants it. |
I toured Blair 20 years ago with a group of teachers. They told us that the last person coming through the lunch line had 8 min to eat and get to their next class. OP we were overwhelmed too! |
When my oldest was there, they took half-dozen magnet classes in their Junior and Senior years because they were really into STEM and did great. They graduated with around 4 or 5's on a dozen APs. They got into a T20 school and felt Blair prepared them to do well in college. |
Does Blair have an open lunch now? |
No |
The school serves a community with lesser resources well. It is easier to produce good results in a school that serves higher income families. Translation: Blair is punching way above its weight! |
Too much traffic on both sides of the school. |
I believe someone upthread said lunch is now a full hour. 20 years ago lunch was 25 or 30 min. |
It's a big and diverse school that serves a wide variety of kids ranging from gifted to not academic. It's big enough that anyone can find their niche and get a great education if that's their priority. When my kids were there they also took magnet classes in their junior and senior year. I thought this was invaluable and something they would not have been able to do at any other school. |
When I was at Blair at the old location on Wayne Ave, we had open lunches and I believe it was 45 minutes and sometimes went home. Ever since they moved to the current location, it has been close lunch. |
It's worth noting that every moco high school except Einstein and Wheaton, I think? Is located on the side of a six lane road with a speed limit of 35-40mph. Most sane people would consider that a problem, but y'all love your SUVs. |
There are lots of DCC kids in the math/science magnet. |
If you're only talking about the DCC high schools, then Blair, Northwood, Kennedy, and Wheaton are. Einstein is not. Outside the DCC, many schools aren't on the side of six lane roads: like Churchill, Whitman, Rockville, Magruder, Springbrook, Watkins Mill, and Poolesville, to name a few. |
Looking at the magnet directory, it's safe to say the largest number of magnet kids have Blair as their home school. |
