Blair is BIG!

Blair is big, but it really doesn't feel that big. I’ve had a couple kids go through the magnet program, from outside the DCC, and we really like it. It’s run very well, most of the teachers (non magnet and magnet)) are really good, and there are a ton of clubs. Your kid (and you on BTSN) definitely get your steps in!

It's so big that it's the honeycomb of HSs!

The magnet is small and many of those kids are in the same clubs or sports. Most of the kids spend most of their time with only magnet kids because their schedules leave little room for classes where they interact with kids in the academies.

I love how proponents of super size schools always taught the depth of obscure clubs available and skirt around the impact of academics, administration, and discipline at an unmanageably large school.

Clearly you know nothing about Blair.
Why you even commented?

Exactly, so many clueless people. The SAT average for the largest cohort common to Blair and any W's shows that Blair scores higher, and they're not even Asians so you can't tell me that its because of the magnet.

Stop pretending that high achieving is a large cohort at Blair, the common cohort represents like 100 kids at Blair and the majority of the kids at the other schools you mentioned while glossing over the best high schools in the county Whitman & Poolesville. If that common cohort is so prevalent to define the school why are their score school wide among the lower of the county even with the magnet inserted specifically to boost scores and perception?

Facts don't lie. The bottom line is when we do a nuanced apples to apples comparison discounting demographic differences Blair wins.

True, Blair's average SAT for the largest demographic to Blair and any W is higher at Blair, and although the haters will say its the magnet, there are few magnet kids in this demographic. It's clear that Blair simply provides an outstanding education for anyone who wants it.

There are lots of DCC kids in the math/science magnet.

Looking at the magnet directory, it's safe to say the largest number of magnet kids have Blair as their home school.

I don't know about Blair as their home school because the boundaries are sometimes a bit strange, but I think it's obvious the largest concentration has home schools in the DCC.

They have half of their classes with non-magnet kids.
You have no idea of what you're talking about.

I had two kids go through the magnet. This is inaccurate and misleading. Over half the school days is spent with non-magnet kids. There are no exclusively magnet clubs.

one lunch now

I toured Blair 20 years ago with a group of teachers. They told us that the last person coming through the lunch line had 8 min to eat and get to their next class. OP we were overwhelmed too!

In their 3 and 4 years at Blair, my kids never once ate in the lunchroom. They tell us it's chaos and that nobody they know goes near. It's mainly FARMS kids in the lunchroom and the school knows this. If everyone ate lunch in the lunchroom, they would never be able to feed everyone in 1 hour.

As for "Closed Lunch" - that's a joke. It may be a rule but it's never enforced. The students all know which door to use. Go to McDonald's in Four Corners during lunch and you tell me whether it's Open Lunch or Closed Lunch at Blair.

NP. I've had two kids go through the magnet. Don't be so literal.
This is a completely accurate description of the point of view of SOME of the magnet kids. You are delusional if you think a child will meet many non-magnet kids if your child is mostly in Science Bowl or Math team. There are some but not a lot of non-magnet kids. It really depends on your child and their interests.

In some schools class size is impacted.
And everything else is. My kid at different large HS. Halls are tight. Certain staircases are one way only. Cafeteria is crammed. Added outside trailers of course, but there's still just 1 library, 1 gym, 1 theatre room, etc. Several families in our neighborhood bypass for private, thankfully, or HS would be larger!!

Where do you get this directory? The magnet directory from Ostrander has students (all four years combined) listed alphabetically.

Agree. My magnet kids interacted with all kids (in classes, clubs and sports). It is not a segmented as the one poster makes it. My kids all thrived there, and we do not live close. The History and English classes are top notch, as well as the magnet. We have found it to be a great and welcoming school. It’s run VERY well and they clearly choose great teachers!
