Is Tory Burch trashy and gaudy to wear? Negative connotation?

Coach has the best quality leather though of this group. Especially the rambler.

I agree. And vintage Coach is even better

Agree. There is a whole group of fashionable women out there who collect vintage coach from back when it was made in America. The brass and leather on the original bags are beautiful.

It's not really about the logos though, is it. An average Kate Spade, Tory Burch or Coach logo on a bag is not bigger than the logo on a Chanel, Dior or Prada bag.

Some people just find 'entry level luxury' trashy, like it's so 'gaudy' to spend $300 on a bag instead of $3000.

OP, why do you care about such a person's opinion?

Op here. Between my weight and race, people tend to make assumptions based on how I am dressed. As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to learn from others who have guided me about what to wear and what not to wear. Thus, it’s important that I know how items come across and if I’ll be perceived a certain way for wearing something.

If you like the bag, then I say go for it. But if you are just looking for a status symbol, TB is probably not the best choice; the status-conscious people will not be impressed.

There is a trend away from being a walking billboard for any brand on anything wearable. Big logos are out. Consumerism is out.

Not every tory burch bag or item has big logos on it, especially now that the Reva trend has passed. I have some items from teh brand and it's hard to tell they're tory burch unless you look super carefully or you know what the current styles look like.

But therein lies the circular flawed logic in justifying these bags. Why do you like THIS $300 bag more than the zillions of similarly priced bags without logos, or the similar quality/asthetic bags that are half the price without logos? Presumably, something about the idea of the Tory Burch brand appeals to you. So for those who say "who cares what others say, just buy the bag you like" - are failing to acknowledge that a big part of the psychology that people "like" these bags is because of the brand, and what that brand conveys to others.

So yes, of course buy what you like. But if what you like is TB, you probably care about the message your bag is sending to others - in which case, the message it is sending is entry level mall shopper.

I say all this as someone who has expensive purses and i have a lot of money to buy whatever I want, but my favorite brand is Hobo - because i genuinely like the asthetic and function, and the quality is phenomenal (last for years) - but no one recognizes the brand or probably thinks anything about my purses because they are non descript.

True, probably. However, there's also plenty to be said about the psychology of people who go out of their way to avoid TB bags, despite not having anything against the look or quality of them, for the sole reason of how others might judge them. Or people who feel that owning a TB bag has to be 'justified' in the fist place.

But OP, if psychology or perception is so important to you then you should go for a Coach bag, with the silent message of 'Up to 2 years ago, Coach was seen as Mall Shopper, but recently fashionable people have started to think that Coach is actually quite cool, with good quality, value and brand, so if you're looking down on my Coach bag, snooty work lady, then maybe it's to get with the times."

OP, do you like the bag? Is it your style (fun and colorful)? If so, buy the bag! Don't let the judgmental Anna Wintour-wannabe coworker make you feel bad about what you like.

Some people in the DMV think Coach and Tory Burch isn't high brow enough, because so many people wear it/can afford it.

Late 50s but they are very much styled like Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada. Wears a cape in the fall/winter, patent high heels, etc.. we are colleagues. I am 36 fwiw.

And they told you this as you were browsing?? I don’t like big logos but anyone who says this to someone not their best friend/sister who asked for an opinion is very trashy!

To each his or her own. I don't like large or even medium logos at all. But I wear a couple of Hermes scarves BC the silk is beautiful imo. My colleague does not wear Hermes scarves but buys inexpensive scarves at tjmaxx. But she routinely wears a Hermes belt with a big H logo I'm the front. She and I were chatting about clothing one day and she told me that if she were going to spend hundreds on something designer then it better have a big logo on it. That's why she'd never buy a Hermes scarf nut goes cheap on that. I'm the opposite. I'll spring for a Hermes scarf but my belt will probably be from J. Crew or Macy's type place.

Just my 2 cents but I generally like TB bags. Agree that the shoes with the logo are dated.

I would never, ever say this anywhere but an anon message board, but TB bags don't seem nearly as try-hard as Neverfulls/St. Louis totes on the working NoVA moms I know. Like girl, I know you're stressing about paying for summer camp. Don't come around here with a 3k+ bag.

But I feel the same way about luxury cars driven by anyone but the legit rich. Just seems like advertising that you have no financial sense and are trying to show off. Enjoy parking that Range Rover in front of your split level, I guess.
